WARNING! |
Count Saint-Germain (サンジェルマン伯爵 Sanjeruman Hakushaku?) is a nobleman and collector of everything that is related to the paranormal, with his main goal being to acquire Dandadan and create the ultimate yokai.[1]
To accomplish his plans, he has enlisted the help of his henchman Red Baron and a former affiliate of the Kur. He is also a reluctant ally of the Serpo, as both parties share a common goal. Meanwhile, he maintains a covert presence at Kami High, posing as Sanjome (三丈目), the deputy head teacher and advisor to the History and Culture Research Club and seeks to acquire the powers of Momo Ayase, Okarun, and the girl's grandmother, Seiko Ayase.
In Dandadan, he serves as an overarching antagonist during the Danmara Arc of the Kintama Hunt Saga (and briefly an ally) and is one of the primary overarching antagonists of the Current Saga.
Appearance[]
Count Saint-Germain outwardly appears to be similar to the human race on Earth, possessing medium-length lavender hair with bangs covering his forehead and blues eyes drawn in a style Tatsu usually uses for female characters. His ears are pierced with green key-shaped earrings. He is considered to be very handsome by the women around him.
His attire consists of a dark coat with decorative lapels and shoulder plates. The collar of his coat is raised up with pins of an upside-down triangle with a single, concentric circle eye on each side. Underneath his coat, he wears an ascot tie wrapped around his neck and a vest reminiscent of a hussar dolma with long sleeves. He also wears a pair of gloves, dark pants tied with a sash that have two additional pieces of fabric on the sides of his legs, and boots that reach up to his thighs. He has katana that is carried on his left hip.
While under his alias as "Sanjome", Count Saint-Germain wears glasses while dressing in a formal suit and tie with black dress shoes.

Personality[]
Count Saint-Germain maintains a stoic disposition while having an eccentric way of talking. He possesses a deep curiosity about the world's enigmas and strives to satisfy this by pursuing and amassing items linked to the paranormal, such as UFOs, enchanted objects, powers from yokai, and, the thing that he desires most of all, Dandadan. Viewing human life as being too short, Count Saint-Germain believes that the best option to achieving this goal is by working with a group, which prompted him to infiltrate Kami High as Sanjome and become the advisor to the History and Culture Research Club. Although this is the case, he is shown to possess a lack of participation when it comes down to minor tasks, such as the renovation of the clubroom. As advisor he can be quite authoritative, having bluntly told Momo that she would do as she was told in renovating the clubroom after hearing her complaint, while also calling her out to be a nimrod. Despite this instance of rudeness, he is shown to possess some level of courtesy for others, having gave up his seat on a train to an elderly woman. He is also shown to enjoy reading as a pastime.
However, Count Saint-Germain's intentions to gather yokai abilities have on multiple occasions been shown to be duplicitous and sinister. As seen when he had tasked Unji Zuma into entering Danmara and destroying it but notably hid the fact he made a prior deal with the demon residing in it that once freed, it would grant Saint-Germain its power. Count Saint-Germain had also conspired with his subordinate Red Baron to operate on a scheme to steal various yokai and supernatural abilities from the Ayase family and their allies by putting them in various amounts of danger.[2] At one point while acting as Sanjome, he personally attempted to steal Turbo Granny's power from Okarun by making him yield to his knowledge and later enlisted a former Kur affiliate to help Hase do the task as backup. Following the failed attempts to take their powers by force, Count Saint-Germain changed his approach, thinking the most efficient way is to befriend the Family to meet their ends.[3]
Presence[]
Count Saint-Germain's identity voided from people's memories.
Count Saint-Germain carries a peculiar presence, one that distorts the memories of those he meets for the first time. Those subjected to this influence notably describe a haze of cognitive confusion.
When he arrived at Kami High and casually occupied Takeshi Murakami's seat in the faculty office under the alias "Sanjome", both Mika Adachi, the teacher seated beside Murakami, and Murakami himself, upon entering to take his seat, experienced a strange disorientation. They believed Murakami's seat had mysteriously vanished, even though they were certain it should be nearby and despite clearly seeing Count Saint-Germain seated there. Following Count Saint-Germain giving out his alias to Murakami after his attention shifts to him, the teacher accepted that the man seating in his seat was his and identified him as the deputy head teacher.[4] Moreover, the students of Kami High, such as Miko and Kei, were convinced that the teacher Sanjome has spent many years teaching at their high school.[5]
After encountering Unji Zuma to give him Okarun's kintama and have free the Fairy-Tale Card from Danmara, the young man later struggled to recall Count Saint-Germain's identity when attempting to inform Momo as to who gave him the kintama.[6]
Whether this phenomenon originates from a supernatural ability possessed by Count Saint-Germain remains uncertain. However, it seems to work to his advantage in terms of infiltration and keeping his true identity a secret. The effect also appears transferable to others. Just as Unji was unable to recall Count Saint-Germain's face, Koki Yukishiro and the Kettetsu Power User experienced similar difficulty with Murakami and an unknown individual after the two persuaders had them entangled in Red Baron and Count Saint-Germain's power‑collecting scheme—suggesting the Count's involvement in obscuring their identities.[7][8] Furthermore, the person who approached the Kettetsu Power User at his work was temporarily embedded in the memories of the man and his colleagues as a long‑time coworker, mirroring Count Saint-Germain's infiltration of Kami High under the guise of a well‑established teacher, though it remains uncertain whether it was actually the Count.
This phenomenon does not appear to affect everyone Count Saint-Germain encounters in the same way. While Adachi and Murakami were convinced that he was the one seated beside Adachi in the faculty office rather than Murakami, two staff members found it odd to be unfamiliar with the man yet familiar with his alias, "Sanjome". It is worth noting, however, that unlike Adachi and Murakami, the two staff members never spoke to Count Saint-Germain directly to be informed of his alias. A similar doubtfulness arose with Momo upon meeting him; the female student showing no signs of cognitive confusion and instead pressing him with many questions about his background.[9] Even after suffering from amnesia, Momo remained skeptical of him. Only a rare few are aware of Count Saint-Germain's true identity, such as his subordinates, the Serpo, Turbo Granny, and the Fairy-Tale Card.
Relationships[]
Turbo Granny[]
The Turbo Granny reacted with intense anger upon seeing Count Saint-Germain's face through the Serpo communicator and referred to him as Hyper Geezer (ハイパージジイ Haipājijii?). While the relationship between the two has yet to be explained, the Turbo Granny's reaction indicates that there is bad history between them.
Background[]
Five years before the start of the series, Count Saint-Germain stole the infamous sword Asura that was sealed away and crafted kozuka knives and kogai from its blade, using both weapons to steal and utilize the spiritual powers of yokai.[10]
Sometime before the Kur Invasion, Count Saint-Germain approached Unji Zuma, who was researching cursed objects at a library, after coming into possession of the cursed trunk holding the yokai known as the Fairy-Tale Card captive. After making a pact with the Fairy-Tale Card to free him in exchange for his yokai powers, Count Saint-Germain persuaded Unji to accept the mission of infiltrating and destroying the inner dimension of the cursed trunk to release the yokai from his confinement, with his Umbrella Boy's powers also being of use to aid the Fairy-Tale Card's escape. Count Saint-Germain then located and claimed Okarun's second kintama at the Kamigoe police box and gave it to Unji to help him freely gain access to his yokai powers while in the inner world.
At some point after the Kur invasion, Count Saint-Germain came across the alien who wielded the jet booster exosuit in a canal and decided to take her and her exosuit to a ruined area until she regained consciousness. After she awoke, he inquired if the damaged suit belonged to her since it was no longer operational and that a new one should be in order. When the alien demanded to know his intentions, Count Saint-Germain revealed his need of her assistance with a certain matter. He offered her the choice of declining, but warned that without his help, surviving on Earth's heavy gravity would be nearly impossible, a fact that became painfully clear as she struggled to stand while speaking to him.
Synopsis[]
Kintama Hunt Saga[]
Onbusuman Arc[]
After the Kur invasion, Count Saint-Germain arrives on Earth by passing through the Gates of Hell. Following his assignment to Unji, Count Saint-Germain infiltrates Kami High where he assumes his guise as "Sanjome", the school's deputy head teacher as acknowledged by the school's staff. He then agrees to become the supervisor for the History and Culture Research Club formed by Momo and Okarun. Rather than responding to Momo's inquiries about his background at school, as she and Okarun have no knowledge of his existence, Sanjome expresses his delight at her curiosity towards him and shares his ambition to explore the world's unknowns by working with a group. He then takes the group to the school's storage room and tasks them with clearing it out to have it serve as their clubroom.
Danmara Arc[]
Count Saint-Germain fights the Fairy-Tale Card.
Upon the Fairy-Tale Cards' release from the cursed trunk, Count Saint-Germain makes his arrival to face him as planned, though not before placing paralyzing talismans from the black cloth the cursed trunk is on to halt the movements of the mind-controlled Renjaku high schoolers. Although the Fairy-Tale Card recognizes the man in front of him and admits to knowing of his plot to free him from the cursed trunk, Count Saint-Germain asks who the yokai is, as he is unfamiliar with his appearance. He proceeds to battle the Fairy-Tale Card while blind, as the yokai has used his powers to make his enemies' eyes disappear. Though the Fairy-Tale Card believes that he has the upper hand in this fight, due to being able to repeatedly regenerate his destroyed cards from his buds, Count Saint-Germain reproaches him for his hubris and figures that the only way to defeat him is by destroying his cards all at once. Knowing that he can't pull of this feat by himself, he decides to have Okarun, Rokuro, and Vega fight alongside him just as they are freed from the cursed trunk.
The Fairy-Tale Card defeated by the combined efforts of Okarun, Rokuro, Unji, and Count Saint-Germain.
Wanting to hold off on introductions for the time being, Count Saint-Germain approaches Okarun about a collaboration to take down the Fairy-Tale Card. He is then identified by Rokuro, who inquires why he is present, to which Count Saint-Germain responds that he does not recognize him and questions whether they had met previously. After the Fairy-Tale Card regenerates from Rokuro's particle beam, Count Saint-Germain tells him and Okarun that they must simultaneously attack his paired cards and asks Okarun if he can use his Turbo Granny power. After Okarun forces his Turbo Granny power to be brought out, Count Saint-Germain assigns him and Rokuro to specific cards to target. In response to the Fairy-Tale Card's failure to take control of Unji after he regains consciousness, Count Saint-Germain advises against heeding its intentions to incite conflict and signals to begin a synchronized assault on the yokai.
Following the Fairy-Tale Card's defeat, Count Saint-Germain finds him in a weakened state and thwarts his escape. After having him yield defeat, he proceeds to extract his yokai powers as planned and states his objective to collect everything related to the paranormal, including yokai powers, and asks him if he happens to be familiar with Dandadan.
Current Saga[]
Sometime after his acquisition of the Fairy Tale Card's power, Count Saint-Germain transferred the ability to a vessel meant to fulfill his plans to create the ultimate yokai and collaborated with Red Baron of the Black Paladins to acquire more powers. After complying to the yokai's plan to have humans do their bidding, Count Saint-Germain lent Red Baron his kozuka knives to grant his selected individuals powers for the mission.[11]
Kozuka Knives Arc[]
Sanjome unsettled during his chance to steal Okarun's power.
At Kami High, Sanjome encounters Okarun rushing through the hallways and cautions him to avoid colliding with others. Choosing to follow, Sanjome presses Okarun about where he is headed and the secrets he may be hiding. When Okarun suggests postponing the discussion, Sanjome refuses, launching into a lecture on his distaste for noise cancellation, metronome synchronization, and bacteria. He then demands Okarun's acknowledgment of the information, preparing to draw his knife and steal Okarun's power. Though Okarun reluctantly agrees to yield, Sanjome hesitates, unsettled by something unexpected, and ultimately decides against carrying out his plan, allowing Okarun to leave unharmed.[12]
Sanjome intercepts the History and Culture Research Club as they run through the halls in pursuit of Koki Yukishiro, ordering them to walk instead. They comply until they are out of his sight.[13] Later, Sanjome approaches Koki directly, asking her to reveal the "secret she spotted", a question that raises suspicion among the club members as they continue investigating the person blackmailing her.[14] While in the faculty office watching a basketball facts video, Sanjome is asked by Murakami if he knows Adachi's whereabouts. After questioning why it matters, Murakami explains that there will be a singles mixer and invites him to attend, which Sanjome agrees to.[15]
Shimane Arc[]
Count Saint-Germain receives the kozuka knives he lent to Red Baron.
Following his henchwoman's failed attempt to get revenge on Okarun, Count Saint-Germain assigns her to work alongside him at Tasty Geezer Breads. After casually dismissing her complaints about the task, Red Baron arrives to return the Asura knives he had borrowed and vows to reclaim the disrupted abilities from his subordinates, hoping to salvage their failed operation. Count Saint-Germain, however, assures him that such efforts are unnecessary, explaining that the setback was not in vain since they have uncovered valuable insights into yokai compatibility and the evolution of supernatural abilities. He reveals to Red Baron that he had discovered an exceptional gift in Koki Yukishiro and that he ended up enhancing her signature ability. Despite this progress, Count Saint-Germain cautions Red Baron, that his actions will inevitably draw the attention of the Sorcerers Association, complicating their operations moving forward. When Red Baron notes that the Serpo have sought their aid without revealing their identities, Count Saint-Germain expresses deep mistrust toward the aliens, suspecting they harbor similar doubts about the alliance. He further explains that the Serpo remain unaware of a critical truth, that only humans can harness yokai powers, and proposes forming an alliance with Okarun to advance the creation of the ultimate yokai.[16]
Current Arc[]
Some days later, Count Saint-Germain complied to construct a new exosuit for his henchwoman upon her request, after she deemed her current one to be flawed, but under the condition that she lend her assistance to whoever blows the shop's whistle.[17]
At school, Sanjome encounters a troubled Momo roaming the halls and insists on hearing about her concerns.[18] The amnesiac Momo questions his identity, prompting him to ask if she had forgotten about him. Though he states his occupation as the History and Culture Research Club advisor, Momo doubts who he claims to be and prepares to walk away. Befroe having her leave, Sanjome lends Momo a crime prevention whistle, telling her that it will probably help her if she were to run into trouble.[19]
Abilities and Powers[]
Natural Abilities[]
Physical Prowess[]
Count Saint-Germain deflecting an attack while blind.
Extrasensory Perception: Count Saint-Germain possesses a sixth sense that allows him to detect incoming attacks, as demonstrated in his fight against the Fairy-Tale Card where he was able to easily avoid and redirect the yokai's bud strikes while blinded by his eye vanishing power. This capability also includes him being able to identify the presence of people, as he could tell that Okarun, Rokuro, and Vega had been released from the cursed trunk.
Immense Speed & Reflexes: Count Saint-Germain possesses tremendous speed and reflexes, with his movements being so swift and powerful that he can knock back a few Renjaku high schoolers just by running past them. He then proceeded to instantly collect the paralyzing talismans on the black cloth used to help free the trapped victims of Danmara and place them on the heads of multiple mind-controlled Renjaku high schoolers without them noticing his presence to react. In his battle against the Fairy-Tale Card, Count Saint-Germain was remarkably fast enough to evade the yokai's oncoming bud strikes and simultaneously dodge attacks from a crowd of mind-controlled Renjaku high schoolers while on the move.
Mental Prowess[]
Keen Intellect: Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Count Saint‑Germain has demonstrated remarkable intelligence, amassing a wide array of knowledge that spans both conventional facts and obscure trivia. He has also proven to be highly observant, as he recognized the need for allies to exploit the Fairy-Tale Card's weakness, its inability to regenerate when two cards are destroyed at once, based not only on his understanding of karuta cards but also on the subtle hint from the yokai who arrogantly claimed that the Count could not defeat him alone.
Skill Set[]
Master Swordsman: Count Saint-Germain has demonstrated to be highly skilled in wielding his sword, being able to execute Iaido where he is capable of unsheathing his blade to slash his target and re-sheath it back in its scabbard in an instant.
Weaponsmithing: Count Saint-Germain is a master of weapon and tool craftsmanship, having forged multiple kozuka knives and kogai from the Asura sword. He also demonstrates the ability to construct advance alien technology, specifically exosuits with functionality comparable to those produced by Big Mamas. However, his henchwoman contends that the exosuit he provided her with was underpowered and cumbersome to operate in combat, suggesting flaws in his engineering—though her criticism may reflect personal bias rather than objective fault.
Teaching: While he infiltrated Kami High as a pseudo long-term teacher, Count Saint-Germain is nevertheless capable of teaching a class.[20]
Baking: Count Saint-Germain possesses skills in baking as a baker at Tasty Geezer Breads alongside his henchwoman.

Trivia[]
- Count Saint-Germain shares his name with the Count of St. Germain, a famous alchemist and adventurer at the French court during the 18th century.
- Count Saint-Germain's name is quite similar to Jiji's favorite soccer team known as Zaint-Germain (サンジェルマン Sanjeruman?).
- Zaint-Germain is likely name from Paris Saint Germain, a French Professional Football Club.
- His alternate identity, Sanjome, sounds similar to Saint-Germain: (Sa(i)N(t) GER-MAI(ne)).
- Count Saint-Germain's collar pins match the upside-down eye symbol on Ludris' chest, and later, the eye symbols featured on Payase and Kashimoto's clothes which instead point up. Interestingly, both Payase and Kashimoto are collectors of the paranormal like Count Saint-Germain. Whether if Count Saint-Germain has any connections with the three is unknown.
- A similar design also appears on a briefcase of Count Saint-Germain containing his kozuka knives.
- The symbols most likely give reference to the Eye of Providence, a symbol recognized by Freemasons as a representation of God's watchful eye over humanity. It is most commonly depicted on the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States on the American one-dollar bill.
- Sanjome states that the phenomenon of noise cancellation gives him a feeling of sickness.[22]
