I Want to Rebuild the House (家を建て直したい Ie o Tatenaoshitai?) is the twenty-first episode of the Dandadan anime series.
Synopsis[]
The battle between Okarun and Evil Eye-fied Jiji has begun. Showing the results of his training, Okarun fights toe-to-toe against Evil Eye, going "full throttle". However, he can't fully defeat Evil Eye. And then, Okarun's transformation is undone…
Plot[]
With his newfound mastery over Turbo Granny's speed, Okarun seizes the upper hand in his clash with the Evil Eye, culminating in a devastating headbutt that sends the yokai crashing to the Ayase house. Having used two of his All-Outs in the battle, Okarun loses his transformation. The Evil Eye remains standing, undeterred and eager to resume the fight, and challenges Okarun to transform again. Aira and Momo voice their concern for Okarun's situation. While Okarun demands for them to not interfere, Turbo Granny takes note that he is trembling with fear as the Evil Eye approaches him. After the Evil Eye demands for Okarun to continue fighting him, Okarun gives his refusal, declaring that he perceives him as being weaker than him. The Evil Eye is stunned by Okarun underestimating him and denies his accusation. Okarun then offers to fight the Evil Eye under the conditions that the yokai became stronger, is willing to target only him as the sole human to confront, and to restrict himself to fighting him only on Tuesdays. As the two converses, Turbo Granny explains to Momo that Okarun's plan all along is to become the Evil Eye's designated playmate, having realized that the Evil Eye is childish and could easily be tricked. Before agreeing to the weekly duels, the Evil Eye hands over his underwear to Okarun, stating that it is refusing to comply with the conditions, and wishes to have it back the moment he has been slain. With Okarun agreeing to look after it, the Evil Eye expresses his eagerness for when he gets to kill him and relinquishes control of the human body back to Jiji. Jiji, now free, is comforted by Okarun, who assures him that he did not hurt anyone and that he can return to a normal life. Meanwhile, Momo, Aira, and Hana avert their eyes while Manjiro reacts with shock as Jiji becomes unaware that he is naked, prompting Seiko to comment on his exposed privates.
Manjiro chooses to return to his shrine with the Evil Eye's underwear, regarding it as a cursed object that requires careful supervision. Seiko cautions him to remain alert and to reach out to her if anything strange occurs. Momo assures him she will visit again but humorously proposes that he should worship a genuine Tsuchinoko instead. Manjiro replies that he cannot make any promises but declares his new goal of becoming a 'Sleeping Bag Bootuber'. After they say their goodbyes, Jiji's parents express their gratitude to Seiko for taking care of their son. However, Seiko feels compelled to apologize, thinking she has not provided an adequate living situation. Okarun and Aira are then taken aback witnessing Seiko acting out of character. Meanwhile, Momo observes Jiji appearing flustered and suspects he is embarrassed, causing him to awkwardly look away. Seiko encourages Jiji to persist with his ki training and to come to her right away if anything goes amiss. Before departing with his parents, Jiji apologizes to his friends for the trouble he has caused and promises to always remember the debt he owes them. Momo expresses her gratitude to Okarun and Aira for their assistance, and Okarun casually mentions he will see her the next day. Dissatisfied with such a mundane farewell, Momo urges him to say something more sincere. This leads to her getting in a little confrontation with Aira, who catches her teasing him. Once all the guests have left, Seiko proposes they visit a bathhouse to avoid confronting the mess of their damaged home, much to Momo and Turbo Granny enthusiasm.
Later, after enjoying a soak at the bathhouse, Momo and Seiko make their way home. With their house still in shambles, Seiko asserts they will simply rebuild it, even though they have exhausted their funds on the bathhouse trip. Momo offers to assist financially, but Seiko dismisses the idea, stating that part-time earnings are not dependable. Annoyed, Momo suggests they ask their guests for help, but Seiko firmly declines, insisting she will not rely on others. When Momo cautions her not to overextend herself as a grandmother, Seiko retorts that her granddaughter should underestimate grandmothers. As they near the torii gate, mourning the loss of their possessions, they notice an alien intruding on their property, prompting them to kick him away without a second thought. Shortly after, Okarun calls out to Momo, who arrives with Aira, Mr. Mantis Shrimp, and Chiquitita. He informs them that they have come to assist in rebuilding the house and introduces Ludris, a construction specialist and friend of Mr. Mantis Shrimp. Though Momo expresses regret for having kicked him earlier, Ludris reacts with clear annoyance, although Mr. Mantis Shrimp claims that being kicked by her was an honor. Seiko becomes initially hesitant to accept their offer of assistance, but ultimately gives in as they continue to insist. The group is then introduced to Ludris' nanoskin technology, which enables them to mold materials directly from their thoughts. Together, they start reconstructing the Ayase home.
With the house finally rebuilt, Seiko expresses her gratitude to Mr. Mantis Shrimp for his assistance. He states that it was his pleasure, and speaks for Ludris as he reacts, saying that his friend was honored to help, though Seiko suspects he may not fully grasp Ludris's alien dialect. Momo conveys her thanks to Okarun and Aira, to which Okarun mentions that he is pleased the house has been restored, admitting it felt like home to him as well. Hearing this, Momo warmly invites him to visit anytime. As the group departs, Momo waves goodbye with a smile, while Seiko quietly notes that they will need to repay their debt properly. Seiko then informs Momo that she won't be able to prepare her bento today, but Momo reassures her, encouraging her to take a rest. Meanwhile, Jiji is pulled into action by his mother, who insists he chase after her and his father as they head to the Ayase house to assist with repairs. However, when the Enjoji family arrives, they are astonished to see the house already restored. Momo steps outside after hearing them and politely requests that they keep their voices down since her grandmother is resting.
Later, Jiji walks to school with Momo and apologizes for the trouble he caused. Momo then inquiries about his situation with the Evil Eye and shockingly learns from him that he has transformed into the yokai several times. Nevertheless, Jiji explains that the yokai has been behaving since making the promise to Okarun, and feels a stronger connection to him now. After Momo offers her support if he ever needs help again, she is asked by Jiji if she has a crush on anyone. This causes her to feel flustered as she gets lost in thought by his question and deny his accusation to be feeling this way. Upon arriving at school, Jiji is approached by female schoolmates thrilled to see him back. Momo walks away, annoyed, as he begins to flirt with the girls. However, when one offers him a drink, Momo panics, realizing it could trigger the Evil Eye's emergence. As expected, the Evil Eye appears, though noticeably with Jiji's clothes intact, and casually threatens to harm the girls, leaving them bewildered. Momo quickly intervenes to pull him away and claim that he is simply joking.
The Evil Eye is insisted by Momo to swap consciousness with Jiji but refuses. Their dispute is interrupted when nearby girls misinterpret their quarrel as flirtatious banter, much to Momo's denial. The Evil Eye's attention then becomes drawn towards the soccer ball being played by the school's soccer team, prompting him to rush towards the field to kick their ball, thinking it is his grudge ball. Momo runs after him, while the team mistakenly believes his excitement indicates he is joining the team. With the vending machines out of hot beverages, Momo resolves to keep a vigilant watch on the Evil Eye throughout the school day. In class, he scribbles furiously and makes loud outbursts, catching the teacher's attention. During lunch, Momo attempts to bring Jiji back with hot food, only to discover that everything is sold out except for cold noodles. She then tries to show him how to use chopsticks to eat his food, only for him to stubbornly throw the chopsticks, after finding them hard to use, and eat with his hands.
After school, Momo joins Miko and Muko, who have observed Jiji's unusual actions. Momo clarifies that he is attempting to alter his image, but Muko speculates that Jiji might be under the influence of the Apartment-Complex Ghost, a mysterious golden ball. Hearing mention of a golden ball, Momo inquiries about this and is shown a picture on her phone of a floating golden ball that is identified as the Apartment Complex-Ghost.
Meanwhile, in class, Okarun is confronted by a classmate who declares him to be his enemy, much to his shock.
