Fūta Zuma (
Appearance[]
Human[]
Futa was a young boy with a shaved head who wore a simple long sleeve shirt and shorts. Gifted by his mother, he wore rain boots as his sole choice of footwear and consistently had an umbrella at his side.
Yokai[]
Umbrella Boy has the appearance of a cyclops; having a large bulging eye with large, exposed teeth. This shadowy head is connected to an abnormally large leg wearing a geta sandal. Most noticeably, and befitting his namesake, Umbrella Boy's body is obstructed by a large, frayed umbrella that has an opening at the front for the yokai to peek through.
Personality[]
Futa was a genuinely happy child who cherished the umbrella and rainboots his mother gave him.
According to the Turbo Granny, Umbrella Boy is said to be a "sweet yokai" by nature but becomes unstoppable when he is forced to fight.
Background[]
Having grown up in poverty, Futa treasured the rainboots and umbrella his mother had given him, making a vow to always take them with him wherever he went.[1] After the death of their father, Futa was protected by his older brother Unji as their mother struggled to raise them by herself. On a rainy day, while heading home, Futa ran after his umbrella after it from flew out of his hands, leading to him to a nearby river where he tragically drowned.[2]
Following his death, Futa's spirit went on to become an Umbrella Boy yokai. Years later, at the location of Futa's accident, Umbrella Boy met Unji, who was rushing to rescue Bega and a boy from drowning in the river, and chose to offer his power to assist in their salvation.[3]
Etymology[]
- Futa's first name means "large wind."
Trivia[]
- Umbrella Boy takes its design from a classic Japanese yokai called the Kasa-obake, an old umbrella that became a spirit, notable for its singular eye and one leg. Kasa-obake are also called Karakasa-kozo, which literally translates into Umbrella Boy.
- Kasa-obake are often depicted as having one leg, but the reason for Dandadan's Umbrella Boy to have one leg seems to stem from the fact that Futa lost one of his boots when he drowned, and as a yokai he ends up only having one geta to stand on.
- Futa's name containing the kanji for "wind" is similar to how his older brother's name contains the kanji for "cloud."
