Jin Enjoji (えん じょう じん Enjōji Jin?), also known as Jiji (ジジ Jiji?), is one of the main characters of the manga series Dandadan.

He is Momo Ayase's childhood friend (and also unknowingly her first crush) whom he lost touch with after moving away. Years later, he enrolls into Kami High and reunites with her after he came to her grandmother Seiko Ayase for help to rid his house of the Evil Eye haunting him, which leads to him becoming the yokai's vessel. After the Evil Eye is kept under control by Okarun, Jiji becomes one of the few to lend his help to Momo and Okarun as they try to find the latter's kintama.

Appearance[]

Jiji Anime Concept Art

Jiji's anime concept art.

Jiji is a very tall and muscular young man, being even taller than his parents with short auburn hair with bangs that fall down to his eyebrows with only the center of his forehead left exposed and brown eyes. He is recognized by the girls at his school to be quite handsome.

When he was first introduced, Jiji wore a tracksuit with an undershirt.

When at school, Jiji wears a collared shirt with a tie, jeans with a belt and the school's blazer. He also wears dark hoop earrings.

Personality[]

Jiji comes off as being a very hyper-active young man who likes to express himself with dramatic movement and faces. He also has a habit of usually ending his sentences with strange verbal tics such as "Fuuuu" (フゥ? Viz: Woo) or "Fuuuuwaaaatsu" (フゥワッ? Viz: Woo-Hoo-Hoo). To some girls, Jiji is viewed as being funny and charming, which is accompanied by his handsome good looks. On the other hand, others might find him to be annoying. In Seiko Ayase's opinion, Jiji's quirky personality makes him come off as being moronic as she would sarcastically comment on him being a "genius".

Jiji has also been noted to give off a "playboy" vibe. After making his introduction to Momo Ayase's classmates, Jiji immediately asked for a female classmate's cellphone number with enthusiasm after finding her to be cute with just a single glance and acted flirtatious around Momo's friends.

Aside from this, he has proven himself to be good-natured. Upon reuniting with Momo after the two lost touch with each other since they were little, Jiji sincerely apologized for mocking her in the past and jumped in to protect her from an alive anatomical model that was charging towards her.

Background[]

During his childhood, Jiji used to be friends with Momo Ayase and unknowingly her first crush. However, after Momo started to follow her grandmother Seiko Ayase's instruction in performing a ritual, Jiji rudely mocked her and eventually lost touch with her after he and his parents moved up to the mountains.

At some point, Jiji started to notice strange things happening around his house, but decided to ignore them after his parents failed to take his word for it. However, Jiji is soon confronted by a spirit in his house and found himself seeing it everywhere he went, including in his dreams, resulting in him being sleep deprived. This encounter then leads to Jiji's parents being hospitalize after coming down with a sickness. Having no choice, the family decided upon hiring well-known spirit mediums to perform an exorcism but are met with failure after three of the five mediums ultimately committed suicide. After being told from them that hiring Seiko would be a last resort, Jiji contacted her about his situation and became permitted to move into her house until his problem is solved.

Abilities and Powers[]

Supernatural Abilities[]

Spiritual Awareness [v · e]

Jiji possesses the ability to see spirits after encountering the Evil Eye in his previous house.

Ki

Jiji possesses incredible reserves of ki that has his spiritual power valued as being extremely rare and desirable for evil spirits to have. Since his training with Seiko, Jiji is able to use his ki to suppress the Evil Eye sealed within him if he comes into contact with anything cold, though he noted that doing so requires him to exert all of his strength, which causes him to become exhausted afterwards.

Techniques
Ha Wave
(波ーツ Ha-tsu?)
Emission
Jiji has the spiritual power to let his ki flow out to emit an invisible burst capable of knocking back anything in his path. He does this by first concentrating on channeling his ki to his hands and then thrusting them forward while cupped. The only main strength of the Ha Wave is that the force of the attack is capable of knocking back Jiji's intended target and having him attack from short to long range. As pointed out by Aira, the Ha Wave lacks the attack power to do any major damage to Jiji's opponent.
Evil Gun
(邪銃 Jagan?)
Evil Gun
A Power of Words enhanced version of the Ha Wave where Jiji utters the words "Evil Gun" to give an increase to its attack power, resulting in a powerful beam of energy being shoot out from the thrust of his hands. It was first used to attack one of the space globalists that was restraining Aira, successfully freeing her.
Power of Words
(言霊 Kotodama?)

After learning from Momo that attacks can be amplified using words, Jiji incorporated this effect into his spiritual power, allowing him to increase the attack power that he was initially lacking.

Etymology[]

  • The name Jin means "compassionate" (仁).
  • Jin's surname Enjoji means "circle, yen, round, money, rotund" (円) (en), "castle" (城) (jo) and "temple" (寺) (ji).

Trivia[]

  • The conditions to Jiji's curse with the Evil Eye is similar to the conditional curse of Ranma Saotome, the main protagonist of Ranma ½ who is cursed to transform into a female whenever splashed with cold water, while hot water is the only thing that can return him back into a male. However, in Jiji's case, the Evil Eye's curse will take and lose effect based on any kind of cold and hot liquid.
  • Despite having known Seiko Ayase ever since he was a child, Jiji did not realize that she is actually Momo Ayase's grandmother until after he reunited with Momo.

Notes[]

  1. Jiji is in a second-year class at Kami High, suggesting that his age is 17.
