Kami High (神髙 Kamikō?) is the high school that main protagonists Momo Ayase and Okarun (along with several other major and minor characters) attend. It serves as one of the main settings of Dandadan.

Overview[]

Kami High is shown to resemble a typical Japanese-style school building with a standard curriculum. Though details about the facility is left vague throughout the series, what can be said so far is that, unbeknownst to most students and faculty, it also houses a large number of spirits. The science classroom is also where the anatomical model Taro resides. It houses several of the Seven School Mysteries.

The male uniform is a typical gakuran outfit.

The female uniform consists of a navy blue buttoned-up blazer with the school emblem located around the left breast pocket and a white-collared long-sleeve shirt that is generally worn underneath with a red bow tie. The short skirt worn matches with the color of the blazer. Both male and female students also switch from wearing the shoes they came to school with to black loafers or uwabaki.

Kintama Hunt Saga[]

Turbo Granny Arc[]

In front of Kami High, Momo Ayase dramatically breaks up with her arrogant boyfriend and heads back to class, where her friends Miko and Muko poke fun at her for doing so despite their warnings about dating him. Momo leaves her classroom feeling down, and notices a boy in the next class being bullied. She enters and sits in between him and the bullies, stopping the bullying, before leaving. The boy chases after her and catches up to her at the staircase at the end of the corridor, where he tells her his guess that she shared his interest in the paranormal.[1]

The morning after the two defeat Turbo Granny, Okarun walks to school and tries to figure out whether they were friends or not. He sees her waiting at the entrance, but in fear and awkwardness decides to pretend that they were not, and walks past her while ignoring her. When Momo sees Okarun ignoring her, she takes the initiative and physically bumps into him, talking with him about their new common interests.[2]

Acrobatic Silky Arc[]

Momo and Okarun part ways and attend their respective lessons. Okarun once again faces mockery and insults from his classmates but found himself not minding this due to knowing he finally had a friend. Meanwhile, Momo daydreams in class, causing Miko and Muko to believe she had reconciled with her ex-boyfriend, argued with him, and broken her phone. Momo and Okarun both became eager to discuss the paranormal, and after class had ended, they set off to find each other. However, their paths did not cross as they ventured out to different areas of the school looking for each other. Feeling disheartened while sitting on the benches outside, Okarun assumed Momo was ignoring him because he was boring, while Momo worried she had been too direct and insensitive to Okarun's feelings. Unaware that they were only a few meters away from each other as they prepare to return to class, the two collided and shared an awkward, fleeting kiss. The two then revealed they had been searching for each other and started blushing, until Miko and Muko, who had witnessed the incident, shouted at them, assuming Momo was dating Okarun. To handle the embarrassing confrontation, Momo and Okarun began badmouthing each other and left, though this didn't change Momo's friends' minds.

Okarun headed to the bathroom, feeling bad about what happened, wanting to apologize to Momo. Upon looking down, he suddenly realized in shock that he had regained only part of his anatomy. He then rushed to Class 2-B, where Miko and Muko were informing their classmates about the incident and made a hand gesture indicating his predicament, which only embarrassed Momo further. He begged her to talk to him, insisting it was important, but she kept refusing. Even when Okarun explained he didn't mean what he said earlier and wanted to discuss the paranormal, her classmates continued to poke fun at her. Okarun sadly wondered if she was too embarrassed to be his friend and left, the entire atmosphere shifting as Miko and Muko had never seen Momo act that way before.

Later in the hallway, Okarun bumped into a gorgeous girl named Aira Shiratori, who made cute comments about him, causing him to blush. Momo, still feeling guilty about their earlier encounter, spotted Okarun and Aira chatting. She was surprised, as she didn't expect Okarun to have any friends. Her surprise turned to anger when she overheard Aira belittling Okarun to her friends, saying that worthless guys like him could never talk to a girl and that she was just letting him live his dreams temporarily for fun. Enraged, Momo used her psychokinesis to drop a washbasin on Aira's head. She then latched onto Okarun's arm, complimenting him in front of the girls, and declared that the girls could never understand his charm. Unbeknownst to Momo, Aira had touched Okarun's kintama, activating her spirit sensibility and allowing her to see Momo's powers, which appeared to her as demon wings.

The next day at school, Okarun was approached by a group of male classmates who believed he was dating Momo. When he denied it, they asked Okarun to introduce them to the beautiful Momo, having heard unsavory rumors about her. Furious, Okarun grabbed one of the classmate's, demanding to know who spread the rumor. The classmate, initially thinking Okarun wanted to fight, was quickly intimidated by Okarun's change in attitude and physical size, a result of manifesting Turbo Granny's powers. Okarun then threatened him to never speak ill of Momo again. The transformation took over Okarun's behavior, and he quickly apologized, returning to his desk and hiding behind his paranormal magazines to avoid eye contact. Just then, Turbo Granny, who had been hiding in his backpack, made fun of him. Okarun ran out with her, asking why she wasn't at home with Seiko, fearing someone might spot her. She explained that now powerless, she was no longer a threat, but her powers inside him might cause trouble. Turbo Granny sought permission to enter his body, though Okarun quickly shut her off, insisting she still needed to recover his kintama. After Momo approached Okarun, the latter initially intended to point out that the cat had hidden in his backpack. However, recalling the classmate's words from earlier, he realized how attractive Momo was and decided to keep his distance to conceal his newfound crush, resulting in Momo chasing him around school in demand to have him make eye contact with her. This als ogave Turbo Granny the opportunity scouted the school. Back in class, Momo consulted Miko about Okarun's avoidance. Miko informed her that he had confronted a classmate who badmouthed her due to a malicious rumor. Despite this, Momo couldn't understand why Okarun was avoiding her.

Meanwhile, Aira wandered the hallways, captivating everyone with her beauty, and recalled how she spread a false story about Momo as retribution for yesterday, having witnessed Momo's psychokinesis and believing her to be a hidden devil. As the only one to see this, she felt chosen, especially after picking up Okarun's kintama filled with spiritual energy, which enabled her to perceive the paranormal. Aira interpreted these events as a sign that she was destined to eliminate the "demon" Momo and accepted this mission. While she examined the golden ball, her two friends brought her the crucifix and the exorcism book she had requested, though they were weirded out by her recent behavior. Suddenly, Aira spotted a woman in a red dress on the soccer field; however, the two girls could not see her. Believing it to be Momo's familiar spying on them, Aira hid on the floor but quickly stood up and chatted with a couple of boys to avoid looking out of place, using hand signs to tell her friends to meet her after school for their plan.

On the roof, Okarun and Momo ate their lunch together, with Okarun still avoiding eye contact. She didn't understand why Turbo Granny was at school, and the spirit stated she didn't need their permission. Momo reminded her that they had defeated her, and they started bickering. Momo informed Okarun about the eerie woman since she was looking for his balls, though Momo thought they were unlikely to be at Kami High. Okarun still had a glimmer of hope because a human might have picked it up, not a spirit. The cat informed them that when someone picked up the golden ball, they became spirit-sensitive, which made them stand out to yokai and might lead to attacks, so they had to check after school. In class, Aira's mind raced, considering the unknown strength of Momo potentially ruining her plan, and she noticed the woman in the red dress getting closer and closer.

After the bell rang, Momo, Okarun, and the hidden Turbo Granny left together to search for the eerie woman. Just then, Aira stopped them and pleaded with Momo to talk. Momo feared Aira might have seen her psychokinetic arms, but she didn't want to create bad terms between them. So, she left the other two, and the girls headed to an abandoned building near the school.

Serpo Arc[]

After recovering one of Okarun's kintama from Aira, he and Momo strolled through the school hallway, pondering the whereabouts of the other missing one. Momo proposed using an online paranormal board as a solution but realized that she no longer had a phone, causing her to consider getting a job to purchase a new one. Okarun was invited to meet with Momo on the school roof for lunch but declined, stating he needed to focus on a school report and wouldn't have time to visit a manga café later. Understanding his situation, Momo decided to have lunch with Miko and Muko, though she couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss, briefly suspecting Okarun might be seeing Aira.

Meanwhile, Okarun was in the backyard, training to enhance his strength for future battles against monsters while following Seiko's workout tips. Aira discovered him and confessed her feelings, despite believing that their relationship was not meant to be due to her assumption that he was a demon. She attempted to kiss him but was pushed away, leaving her shocked as she had read about such advances in one of his father's adult magazines, which only confused Okarun further. He was astonished by her lack of understanding of romance, especially given her popularity with boys, and tried to keep her at a distance, but she ultimately ended up beneath him, asking for a kiss. Momo's suspicions were unexpectedly confirmed when she caught the two in an uncomfortable situation, prompting her to express her disappointment through an insult before storming off. Okarun attempted to follow her to clarify the misunderstanding, but her perception remained unchanged as she saw him drenched in sweat, interpreting his report as a mere pretext for his affectionate behavior with Aira. Back in class, she slammed her head onto her desk in frustration, neglecting the drinks she had brought for Miko and Muko. During a science lesson focused on mantis shrimps, Momo continued to brood and found herself empathizing with the mantis shrimp in the class fish tank, particularly regarding its punching ability. In an effort to distract herself from the earlier incident, she punched herself, leading Miko and Muko to believe she had been overtaken by the spirit of the mantis shrimp.

Trivia[]

  • The building of Kami High is mostly likely based off of Takushoku University 1st High School located in Musashimurayama, Tokyo.
  • Kami High from the Ayase residence is shown to be at least walking distance. From the Ayase residence, the route typically starts off by heading left from the entrance.
    • One instance of the right path being taken was Okarun, Turbo Granny, and Aira heading to the school at night to improve on Okarun's combat rhythm against the Music Room Portraits.
  • According to Seiko, the large number of spirits that dwell in the school connects to the Seven Mysteries (七不思議 Nanafushigi?), a common urban legend centered around Japanese schools that tell of seven supernatural occurrences.
