Kinta Sakata (坂田金太 Sakata Kinta?) is one of the main characters of the manga series Dandadan.

He is a student at Kami High who later became one of Momo and Okarun's main allies whenever the two are faced with the paranormal.

Appearance[]

Volume 10 Color Page 2

Kinta's color scheme.

Kinta is a young man with a rotund build, short-trimmed middle-parting dark hair and wears glasses. For attire, he wears his school's gakuran outfit.

Personality[]

Kinta acts vain and prideful, particularly towards young men around his age who he has no interest in interacting with. After Okarun and Jiji carried the defeated Bamora to the Ayase house, Kinta immediately stepped out with a condescending attitude, calling them out as useless for being late and brushing off any flattery from them. He is also an attention seeker, having wanted to present himself at school as an important person to Momo, Okarun, and the others by putting on an eyepatch and wrapping himself in bandages, with the false story behind his appearance being injuries from a battle against an alien that he won single-handedly. Kinta often tries to act cool and strong in front of people, often making eccentric statements and poses. Additionally, he is too proud to admit his own shortcomings and will justify his failures with an excuse.

However, this personality is admitted by Kinta to be a façade. Fully aware that he is an individual who can't amount to anything, Kinta tried masking his insecurities by finding fault in others and making attempts at being acknowledged by his peers. In light of him having nothing to be proud, Kinta declares to be a person who remains true to himself. With his love for robots and girls driving him, Kinta refused to give up and leave behind the Great Kinta and Bamora out of fear of being crushed inside the cockpit by the Spatial Suit Exosuit Kur, stating that he would regret it for the rest of his life, and persisted on with trying to defeat the Kur.

Despite his prideful and awkward traits, Kinta has more than a bit of bravery. He is eager to help the Family face the unknown, as he was visibly excited to have a chance to rush into the fray after finding an SOS note attached to the Ayase house. Even when hurt in a fight and facing possible death, he was able to keep his cool, protect Bamora, and find a way to come out on top against the Hastur Kur. Even during his first battle, when he was largely helpless and incapable of fighting, he rushed into danger to discover the secret of the enemy's invisibility rather than flee to save himself. His bravery is overshadowed by his irritating way of communicating to people, yet he refuses to back down when confronted with the unknown and consistently seeks solutions whenever feasible.

When it comes to the opposite sex, Kinta desires to be seen as being charming to girls but ends up failing from getting the wrong idea analyzing relationships between young men and women. He is also perverted, as he hoped to lock lips with Momo as he was sent flying towards her by Bamora and wanted to end his fight with the Spatial Exosuit Kur quickly to have a "lovey-dovey thunder break" with Bamora.

Along with wanting to be liked by girls, Kinta's other prominent personality is his passion for mechas. While having a hobby of collecting mecha figurines called Dandams and watching mecha genre anime, Kinta dreamed of one day piloting a mecha and committed himself to preparing for the momentous occasion by riding amusement rides to avoid robot sickness. Come the battle against Bamora's out of control exosuit, Kinta's dream came to fruition as he exercised his knowledge of mechas to construct one of the nanoskin the Ayase house is made of and was overjoyed in the end.

Kintama Hunt Saga[]

Kaiju Arc[]

At school, Kinta approaches Okarun to ask him about his secret to attract girls given how he is associated with Momo and Aira, only for the latter to answer that he is not attractive to them. Kinta then notices Momo coming in to see Okarun and becomes surprised to hear her talking to him about how she found his kintama, which makes him come under the impression that the secret to becoming attractive is to speak inappropriately. As Momo ends up getting into an argument with the class representative concerning Okarun, Kinta watches from sidelines and cuts in to state a dirty joke to get the girls attention, which ends up annoying Momo.

Later, Kinta secretly follows Okarun and Momo to an apartment complex in hopes to further understand how he can be popular with girls through inappropriate language. However, Kinta is spotted by the two after they hear his foot coming into contact with a paint can and tries to play off him shadowing them as a coincidence that they took the same route home. Kinta then finds himself levitating off the ground and sent flying towards Momo. This causes Kinta to think that he will lock lips with her in the process, only to end up face planting to the ground after Okarun moves her out of the way. After a floating gold ball suddenly appears, Kinta is ordered by Momo to watch her and Okarun's bags as they chase after it, which he loyally complies to do. Shortly after, Kinta is targeted by the golden ball and is drop down the apartment complex. Luckily, he is saved on time by Momo and decides to perform a rush attack towards the golden ball, only to end up going right pass it. However, Kinta relays his theory that their enemy is using retro-reflective projection and that they will be able to see them from three sides. Going off of this, Momo manages to detect the invisible target by swinging herself around the balcony and restrains it with her powers, giving Okarun the opportunity to attack it with an All-Out charge attack that sends the target crashing out of the building. Kinta is then thanked by Momo for his help and becomes flattered, which leads to him going into a rant about how invisibility works. The three then look to see that the invisible enemy is a kaiju but wonder where the golden ball is at. While desperately trying to ask Okarun how to best use inappropriate language, Kinta, Momo and Okarun look to see the kaiju glaring at them after it suddenly enlarges.

The three then run away from the gigantic kaiju as it chases after them in Empty Space, leading to them running into Aira and Jiji who become shocked to see the monster heading their way. After tripping and becoming exhausted, Kinta is left helpless as the kaiju prepares to step on top of him. However, he is saved by Okarun after he transforms to move him out of the way and is carried by Jiji as Momo, Okarun and Aira battle the kaiju. As Kinta panics with confusion as to what was happening, Jiji ask that he not sweat on him to prevent the Evil Eye from awakening. Taking this as an insult, Kinta comes under the assumption that Jiji is pompous and proceeds to spray his sweat on him, resulting in the Evil Eye awakening. Kinta then wonders what has come over Jiji after noticing his change in appearance and starts to chase after him after he heads over to the Ayase residence, having made him think that it was time for him and Okarun to fight after stating that he and the others were meeting up at the place.

At the house, Kinta continues to distress over the situation with the kaiju coming after him but turns his attention to Okarun as he explains his plan to use the nanoskin the Ayase house is made of to weaponize it against the kaiju. After Okarun tries to give a brief demonstration by reforming the inside of the help, Kinta provides his assistance by using his sci-fi imagination to reform the house into something big as requested. Due to Momo's imagination ending up taking over the transformation process however, the house becomes reformed into a mecha Buddha statue, which displeases Kinta since it was not what he had in mind but quickly becomes satisfied since he is inside a giant robot. Kinta then proceeds to name the mecha and becomes ready to face the kaiju. However, both him, Momo, Okarun, Aira and the Evil Eye as pilots run into the problem of trying to figure out how to control the mecha and end up becoming the kaiju's punching bag by the time it reaches them. As the kaiju prepares to stomp on the mecha Buddha, Kinta manages to get the robot to move to catch the monster's foot on time and attack. While explaining how he had dreamed of piloting a mecha, Kinta has the damaged done by the kaiju repaired and reforms it into his liking as he gets ready to battle the kaiju.

Kinta gains the upper hand against the kaiju using special attacks that greatly deals damage to the monster. After the kaiju resorts to using its invisibility, Kinta prepares to use the mecha's infrared scope to pinpoint its location but becomes too late as the kaiju causes the mecha to fall by breaking off its left leg. With the airbags getting in the way of him trying to eject himself from the mecha, Kinta begins to panic as the kaiju continuously damages the mecha. The attacks then cease after Momo and Aira use their powers to restrain and uncover the kaiju's presence. Kinta thanks the two for their help and tells them to leave the rest to him. However, he is angrily yelled at by the two females to not do anything since his piloting caused them to feel motion sick. The kaiju is then finished off by Momo who uses her powers to lift it into the air and slam it down on its head.

With the kaiju unable to continue fighting after it shrinks down, Kinta and the others escape out of Empty Space and return to the normal world where the mecha becomes exposed to the public. Kinta then helps Momo to have the mecha relocate to its previous location and reform it back into the Ayase house by instructing her to visualize it. After this is done, Momo and Aira run out of the room after feeling sick while Kinta becomes overjoyed with the fact that he lived out his dream of piloting a giant robot. He then meets back with Okarun and Jiji after they brought back the kaiju and learns from Okarun that he and Momo are on a mission to search for a golden ball that aliens and spirits are also after, leading to Kinta to come under the impression that the item shoulders the fate of the world. Having been informed about this, Kinta tells Okarun that he will offer his strength to help but is turned down by the latter.

Turning their attention towards the kaiju, Kinta becomes shocked to hear from Okarun that a person inside the monster's mouth and orders Jiji to investigate, much to his objection. The three then discover that the kaiju is actually a mechanical suit after Okarun found a zipper and, upon unzipping it, become shocked to see an alien girl inside who comes in to kiss Okarun after making eye contact with him. After witnessing this, Kinta reacts with disappointment that he was not the one to unzip the suit to receive the kiss and sees Momo attacking the alien girl after she to saw the scene. Kinta recommends to Momo to cease her assault on the alien girl to hear her out but is yelled at by Momo since she could tell that he only wanted the alien girl to like him.

Needing someone to translate for the alien girl, Kinta, Okarun and Jiji visit the alien Mr. Mantis Shrimp to see if he could help. Using his translator that could only pick up on a few of the alien girl's words, the three learn that her name is Bamora and that she came to Earth to seek a husband that was capable of defeating her in battle, which then leads to Kinta stepping in to try and take credit given how he was the one piloting the mecha. Despite this, Bamora continues to accept Okarun after coming in to hug him, much to Kinta's disappointment to see.

Later, Kinta joins the others for dinner at the Ayase residence where he becomes shocked to be introduced to the Turbo Granny. During this, Kinta ends up getting yelled at by Momo and Aira for annoying them as the group converse about Bamora. Shortly after, Kinta and Jiji check on Bamora's kaiju suit and become eager to try it on after being astound by its technological features. Unknown to him and Jiji after the latter steps inside first, a signal is accidently sent to an alien that recently attacked the Serpo.

Space Globalists Arc[]

In an attempt to impress Momo, Okarun, and their schoolmates, Kinta feigned injuries from a grave battle by wrapping himself in bandages and donning an eyepatch. Yet, this act proved futile upon discovering their absence. After finishing with school, Kinta takes a detour to the Ayase residence, only to be shocked to find the house missing. This revelation leads him to the conclusion that the others have departed for a significant battle, leaving him feeling disappointed that his help is not required. Upon discovering an SOS message on the torii gate, Kinta sees an opportunity to unite with the group and reconstructs the nanoskin torii gate into a motorcycle, making his way to Tokyo Tower.

Kinta makes his entrance onto the battlefield by plowing through a swarm of Kur who were up against Aira. After making a remark about his delayed arrive, Kinta chooses to ignore Momo, Okarun, and Aira as they disapprove of his arrival, with Momo in particularly being disappointed that he took the note intended for her grandmother. Kinta then inquiries about Momo's house, hoping to regain control of the Great Kinta, and is devastated to learn from her that it has been destroyed. Upon learning that Bamora is about to be dropped from a great height by the Hastur Kur, Kinta transforms his bike into a rocket in an attempt to rescue her. However, he ends up falling as well after the Kur shoot down his rocket. As the two plummet, Kinta reaches his hand out to grab Bamora's, calls on the nanoskin from the demolished Ayase house to reconstruct the Great Kinta and confront the Hastur Kinta who has taken over Bamora's kaiju suit, with him making the first attack by using the Tokyo Tower as a weapon.

Kinta engages in combat with Hastur Kur, who wields the Tokyo Skytree as a weapon, countering Kinta's use of the Tokyo Tower. Kinta gains the advantage in his battle and is gratified when Bamora acknowledges him as a formidable fighter. However, he soon loses ground after the Hastur Kur uses the kaiju suit's horns to deal significant damage to the Great Kinta and pull out the cockpit. As the alien crushes it, Kinta continues to resist by calling on the nanoskin. After the Hastur Kur questions Kinta's persistence, Kinta asserts that despite his sense of personal inadequacy, he will not abandon his passions: robots and beautiful girls, both of which are in his presence. After ejecting from the cockpit alongside Bamora onto the back of the kaiju suit, Kinta forms the nanoskin into a form fitting jetpack. Together, they control it to propel the suit upwards. Emulating Momo's tactics from her prior victory over Bamora, Kinta and Bamora execute a spinning powerbomb, sending the kaiju suit plummeting to the ground, targeting the pilot inside for direct damage.

Kinta expresses his jubilation regarding his victory over the Hastur Kur as he and Bamora safely parachute to the ground, yet his enthusiasm is somewhat subdued when Momo refers to him as "Erosuke". Following the invasion's conclusion, with Reiko Kashima eliminating the entire Kur fleet, Kinta and the rest depart from the city.

At the Ayase house, the family are served barbeque by Seiko, with Kinta interacting with Jiji and Bamora as they make faces. He and the others then accompany Momo to the market, with Kinta mistakenly believing that Momo is intimidated by his presence as he follows behind her. Along the way, they run into Reiko Kashima who expresses her choice to leave and find a partner. In response, Kinta advises Reiko Kashima to abandon the notion and cautions her about the dangers of falling for him if chosen as a partner. After dropping by the market, Kinta, Okarun, and Jiji choose to buy figurines, which annoys Momo for misusing her spending money.

Onbusuman Arc[]

Kinta sits with Aira as Momo, Seiko, Turbo Granny, Jiji, and Bamora commence the ball game ritual of putting Okarun's kintama back in his crotch.

At school, Kinta, Momo, and Okarun hear Bamora demonstrate her ability to speak Japanese, with Kinta stating his displeasure to know that her manner of speaking is a mimicry of Okarun's speech. Kinta then suggests to Momo about starting an occult club at school, providing an official space for them to meet and talk about their quest to find Okarun's kintama. After the club is established with deputy head teacher Sanjome as their advisor, the four are assigned the task of clearing out an old storage room to convert it into their clubroom.

Danmanra Arc[]

At Goro Stamina Booster, Kinta and the others discover that Momo has been reduced in size after her escape from the Fairy-Tale Card's cursed trunk. Upon witnessing Momo adorned in a dollhouse by Aira, Kinta feels compelled to ask her to enter some of the plastic models he has constructed. Having been excluded out of the paranormal situation, he, Jiji, and Aira urge Momo to reach out to them for assistance.

As Seiko and Turbo Granny get ready to return Okarun's final kintama to his crotch, Kinta captures the moment with a camera, with one of his shots being Momo perched on Bamora's shoulder as requested by Aira to take a picture of. Later, the group watch as Okarun honors his agreement to give Turbo Granny back her power, with the intensity of her power overwhelming Kinta and the others. After Turbo Granny has her power subside, the group watch as she takes her leave now that she no longer has any reason to stay with them.

Great Kinta Bodhisattva, Zeta Version - Second Form

Kinta previously piloted a mecha Buddha construct of the Ayase house. After figuring out that the mecha could only be controlled through visualized movements, Kinta altered the first form of the mecha to have it more form fitting for battle. In this form, the V-fin is changed to sunglasses, the robe is changed into a sleeveless gi with a scarf draped over its shoulders, and circular plates are placed on its hips.

The pilot for this form was Kinta who controlled the mecha to fight in melee combat and perform improvised techniques. To handle the kaiju's invisibility, Kinta imagined the mecha's sunglasses as an infrared scope but was attacked before the feature could prove to be useful.

Etymology[]

  • The surname Sakata means "sloped rice field" (坂田); the word itself is a compound of "slope" (坂) (saka) and "rice field" (田) (ta).
    • It's also homophonous with the popular rice snack company Sakata Beika.
  • Kinta's given name means "golden and thick"; the former possibly being a reference to his fascination with the kintama and the latter being a nod to his size. The word is a compound of "gold" (金) (kin) and "thick, fat" (太) (ta).
    • Interestingly enough, Kintaro is the name of a folk hero in Japanese mythos. Kintaro was also known as Sakata Kintoki (坂田 金時), who shares the same surname as Kinta and they both have given names meaning gold and with a similar sound.

Trivia[]

  • Kinta is listed as #4 among Yukinobu Tatsu's top 4 favorite characters in the series.[1]
  • Besides Dandam being an obvious nod to the Gundam series, Kinta's mecha pays homage to several anime shows of the genre, with two notable ones being the Mazinger series (which pioneered the iconic Rocket Punch used in many series, including non-mecha) and Gurren Lagann (whose titular mecha wears similar pointed glasses and makes use of drills).
