WARNING! |
The kintama (金玉) were the missing testicles of Ken Takakura that were taken and lost by Turbo Granny.
Appearance[]
The kintama are two shiny gold balls estimated to be about 5 centimeters across.
Overview[]
The kintama are made up of the Turbo Granny's spirit energy membrane that gives them their golden color and harbors a powerful life force. This makes the kintama valuable items for yokai to possess since, in theory, they can come back to life if they collect a powerful life force. For humans, the kintama grants them the ability to see spirits and other supernatural occurrences once they make contact with it.
According to the data collected by the Serpo, the kintama also have the capabilities of supplying aliens with great amounts of energy for their advanced technology. This was proven to be true, as one of the kintama stolen by the Kur helped to power the warp gate that was used to have the aliens' main force enter Earth.
History[]
Kintama Hunt Saga[]
Turbo Granny Arc[]
In the midst of her exorcism by the trap set up by Seiko, the Turbo Granny made a last-ditch effort to survive by inconspicuously hiding inside of Okarun's body and taking possession of his kintama. However, she ends up losing them.
Okarun's family jewels were found by Aira Shiratori and Rin Sawaki, resulting in both gaining the ability to see spirits. While the former decided to keep it on her person, the latter made the decision to hand it over to the police as a valuable object.
Acrobatic Silky Arc[]
After one of Okarun's kintama falls on her head at the time of the Turbo Granny's exorcism, Aira Shiratori found herself with the ability to see spirits and mistook the ball as a sign that she had been chosen as the world's savior, with Momo being recognized as her enemy. While in possession of the kintama, Aira used it in a delusional attempt to exorcise Momo after she and her friends ambushed her, much to the latter's shock to see her with the ball. After defeating the yokai stalking Aira, Acrobatic Silky, Momo and Okarun retrieved the kintama from an unconscious Aira.
Serpo Arc[]
With the kintama retrieved from Aira, Momo, Seiko, and the Turbo Granny proceed to place it back to Okarun's crotch through a game of baseball, much to his chagrin, but elated to be partially whole again.
Space Globalists Arc[]
After learning about the power dwelling in Okarun's kintama from the data they stole from the Serpo, the Kur targeted Okarun for the kintama he possessed to supply power to a warp gate that will have their main force enter Earth to initiate their invasion of the planet. Okarun defended himself against the aliens but ended up losing his kintama to them after being defeated. With the kintama acquired, the Kur activated their warped gate to allow a number of their ships to enter the Empty Space erected. Momo and Okarun managed to get passed the Kur to retrieve the kintama and deactivated the warped gate. However, the entire main force managed to slip through the portal before it completely closed and began to destroy the area. Unpleased by this, Reiko Kashima used her mirror ability to eliminate the entire Kur army and made her leave after briefly encountering Momo and Okarun.
Onbusuman Arc[]
The Family, with the new additions of Kinta and Bamora, play another game of baseball using Okarun's kintama as the ball, succesfully reconnecting it to his body. Momo wonders where the other family jewel could be and Kinta suggest to form a school club to gather information more easily. She initially dislikes the idea, considering it lame and also hard to form since they would need to provide a realistic goal, however Okarun suggests to base it on occultism, rebranding it in the History and Culture Research Club. They ask the school for a faculty supervisor and Murakami introduces them to the cryptic and mysterious teacher Sanjome.
The class president Rin Sawaki approaches Okarun and reveals how she can see his "vampire" form, product of Turbo Granny's powers, since she touched the golden ball. He asks if she still possesses the family jewel and, after blushing to the involuntary dirty joke, informs him that she took it to a police box since it looked valuable. She questions him if he knows anything about it, stating that it's just a lump of spirit energy to avoid further embarassment. However, she admits she truly believes in spirits and once she came in contact with the golden ball, she has been struck by an incredibly unpleasant feeling which becomes heavier as time passes. The two consult the police box and discover it has been collected by an unknown person. They begin theorizing about the police man lying since proof would be needed to retrieve a lost object when Rin is suddenly crushed by an intangible spirit.
Danmara Arc[]
After the successful Onbusuman Operation, Okarun finally informs Momo that Rin had found the kintama and deposited it to a police box, which has been then retrieved by someone. Believing that they might have been tricked, the two visit the police box the following day and Momo utilizes her aura seeking powers. Despite spotting many orb artifacts, the kintama is nowhere to be found. Considering that collecting lost property requires giving information, they plead Turbo Granny to act as lost property and enter their computer to get data. She fails to provide a password, but the duo surprisingly find Rokuro Serpo working as a store clerk and they ask for his help. Using the nanoskin, Rokuro disguises himself as an officer and accesses the network, discovering that the golden ball has been collected by a student named Unji Zuma, who attends Renjaku High School.
The two interview a classmate of Unji's, Toriumi, who claims Zuma has been giving off a deadly aura like he's possessed by a ghost. They ask him if he had a golden ball with him which he confirms, claiming that he would apparently use it to destroy the world. Okarun unleashes his Turbo Granny powers which causes a visible reaction in Toriumi, finding him exactly identical to Zuma and running away in fear.
While searching for Zuma, the duo is approached by a naked man being chased. To defend him and Momo, Takakura turns into yokai form which shocks the gangsters. Ayase notices this and questions the group if they have become spirit sensitive recently after touching the family jewel. After a tense confrontation, the leader brings them to their hideout where a diorama is found. The boy reveals that Zuma had been approached by a mysterious person while researching deeper into the cursed wicker trunk, stating that he must need the kintama if he wanted to destroy the world inside. Momo is then accidentally pushed inside the diorama while the gangsters tried to force the man back in, disappearing.
While in the alternate reality, Momo gets attacked by the Dark Knight but is saved by Unji Zuma whos manifesting his yokai powers. She demands the golden ball back but he refuses, not until he destroys the world since without it he wouldn't be able to use his abilities inside Danmara. He reveals how the unknown person met him in the library, who for some reason is unable to remember his face, and he knew about his powers and his desire to rebel against the world. He then easily retrieved the ball from the police box and the man informed him that he needed to bring it inside the diorama. She asks why that individual needed Zuma to do it and he affirms that he couldn't enter the cursed trunk and thus asked him. Unji later asks for Ayase's name but she promises to tell only after he gives her the kintama.
Seeing a gigantic candy themed obstacle course up ahead, Unji opts to give his trousers to Momo since she's wearing a skirt, however the kintama was placed in one of the pockets and slipped out. Momo rushes Zuma to catch it when they are met with a group of frogs which are seemingly going after the golden ball too. With the unexpected arrival of the Death Pâtissier, the duo struggles but they ultimately win as Zuma launches the kintama towards Momo and she deploys a Moe Moe Tri-Beam, defeating the giant. Acknowleding Ayase's strength and considering his umbrellas need to recharge, he decides to let her keep the golden ball for the time being. Later on, the two showcase and explain their powers while holding the golden ball.
After completing the game and freeing the Fairy-Tale Card, the yokai possesses Zuma who currently has the kintama. Momo and Okarun are forced to use the card obtained by the defeated Medusa to survive. Ayase gets injured however Okarun gets helped by Masamichi Vega and Rokuro and gets his hand on the family jewel, now being able to unleash his Turbo Granny powers. He incapacitates Brella Boy, leading to everyone there see visions of Zuma's childhood. The Fairy-Tale Card takes back control and escapes the diorama while the world of Danmara begins to collapse. Rin uses her Onbusuman's gravity powers to lift the figurines of all the players outside, however Momo doesn't appear to float. Turbo Granny is in disbelief as she realizes she ate the food of the world, cursing her. Okarun tries to break the curse by lending her the golden ball but it's futile. Turbo Granny affirms that they have to beat the Fairy-Tale Card to break the curse and free her before it's too late.
A couple days after the defeat of the evil yokai, the Family reunites for one last baseball game in which Seiko finally swings and hits the kintama, causing it to fly high up in the sky and in the fields in front of the Ayase Residence, leading to a desperate search for it. Okarun has finally reobtained both his family jewels and thanks everyone for the help they provided, however Turbo Granny reminds them about the promise they made, consisting of giving her back the stolen powers. Ken keeps his promise and Seiko performs the ritual. Turbo Granny stares back at the Family with a malevolent glare before absorbing her powers. Now that she has got them back, she states that she no longer has a reason to stay around and says goodbye before setting off, ending the Kintama Hunt Saga.
Trivia[]
- Kintama is a Japanese slang term for testicles, similar in use and concept to the English slang "family jewels". Kintama are generally associated with Bake-danuki, the folklore version of the animal Tanuki, in which they are believed to have magical shapeshifting abilities, including their oversized scrotums, which the animals could use in multiple ways.
