Okarun, Aira Shiratori and Turbo Granny vs. Music Room Portraits is a battle that took place in an alternate reality brought to life by the Music Room Portraits through their symphokinesis at Kami High. Turbo Granny decided to train Okarun to get him stronger and she led him to the school to summon the tulpas, along with Aira who secretly followed them.

Prologue[]

The Evil Eye trapping Momo in the cursed house.

Because of the recent close call where Momo was trapped in the Evil Eye's cursed house and almost murdered, Okarun understands that he has to get stronger to protect his friends and initially begs Mr. Mantis Shrimp to have him as his disciple and teach him how to throw a punch. The alien refuses and Okarun finds himself training on his own by reading a boxing manga, although in Turbo Granny's eyes he looks ridiculous and makes fun of him. He informs her that he wants to toughen up so he can overpower the Evil Eye, although she remains confused and asks whether he wishes to become stronger or simply learn how to punch. Okarun believes they are one in the same but the cat negates this, explaining that the Evil Eye is above him in technique and power meaning that punching alone won't suffice, also admitting that his speed is phenomenal enough to keep up with hers. She again inquires whether he desires to get stronger or learn how to throw jabs and he chooses the former, revealed to be the correct decision as she leads the boy to Kami High to train him. Aira notices their departure and decides to follow them.

They enter the school along with Aira who doesn't tolerate the cat's presence and they enter the music room, which emanates an eerie atmosphere late at night. Turbo Granny plays a note and scares them both, instructing Okarun to jump in time with the slow melody. She explains that it corresponds to Okarun's combat rythm and compares it to the Evil Eye's by smashing the piano very quickly, showcasing the difference in speed which would allow the yokai to do four different moves while Okarun does just one. The boy asks if that means he's even faster than her, frustrating her and telling him that it's a matter of technique in having a non-monotonous rythm. Turbo Granny remarks that both Aira and the Evil Eye can switch four moves in one beat, with the latter reaching ten when inside his cursed house, while Okarun barely scratches two. Suddenly, an orchestra fills the room and Turbo Granny smiles as the duo is approached by the flying Music Room Portraits. When asked if they were the ones playing awful music, Turbo Granny shouts that it's the humans' fault, starting the battle.

Vanben strokes the piano and flings explosive notes at the enemy, prompting them to manifest their yokai abilities as the whole orchestra begins playing their instruments, filling the room with musical symbols. The power users try to close the distance but Okarun touches one of the notes, causing it to blow up and destroy his clothing. Aira is concerned for him and Turbo Granny shouts that the notes are explosive while the rest symbols will cause them to freeze up if hit, but Aira wonders how are they even going to run through that musical barrage unharmed. Just then, Vanben orchestrates the Symphony No. 6: Pastoral, transporting everybody into an illusionary paddy field generated through their symphonkinesis. At first the duo is amazed but Turbo Granny tells them to focus on the projectiles, although their feet keep sinking into the ground, making movement difficult. The Music Room Portraits then start mumbling incoherent and random phrases derived from their real-life counterparts until Ninth demands to increase the tempo and send out even more notes at the enemy. Okarun meanwhile watches Aira in awe as she skillfully evades the bombs, causing him to lose focus and a rest symbol lands on his head, freezing him in place and gets bombarded with projectiles, worrying Aira. She doesn't have time to stop due to the continuous barrage and demands the musicians to stop levitating so she can beat them up.

They focus all their firepower on her, giving Okarun time to recover which he spends putting himself and his strength down. Turbo Granny is irritated and screams at him to stand up and follow his sense of ryhthm as the tempo of the performance is increasing and Aira might get overwhelmed too. She reassures him that he doesn't have to follow the musicians' play but he just needs to remember any piece of music and coordinate his body to that rythm. Okarun initially admits that he doesn't listen to music until he's reminded of the recent concert played by the Hayashi which had really moved him. Meanwhile Aira tries to extends her hair to hit them in vain due to the barrage when her feet get suddenly stuck into the ground. Vanben laughs, explaining that her strategy of avoiding the notes eventually filled the entire field and left her nowhere to go. Out of the giant explosion, Okarun incredibly dashes through while carrying her and runs in the direction of the musicians, his movement synchronized to the past performance of the Hayashi. Aira understands and follows his rythm too, dancing and moving together through the storm of bombs as Turbo Granny cheers him on. The duo finally arrives under the tulpas and the huge cloud of smoke leaves an opportunity for Aira to pull down the conductor Ninth with her hair and finishes him off with a kick.

As Aira points out, since Ninth's power made them levitate, they all plummet down into the paddy field. Before they can rush to eliminate them, Vanben takes on the role of conductor and begins the Symphony No. 9: Chorus, followed by the rest of the orchestra. Aira is confident that their musical barrage won't stop them anymore when they are suddenly faced by four giant opera singers. In just a moment, they turn around and notice that they have been transported at the center of a gigantic hall, filled to the brim with chorus singers that swarm the area to take them down. Turbo Granny informs them that they are just illusions and they need to find the musicians, although the massive crowd blocks their view. The cat is lifted up with Aira's hair and she spots them at the feet of the giant opera singers, but they simply cannot move as the henchmen pull them apart. Aira shouts at Okarun to grab her hand before wrapping her hair around one of the giants' eyes, escaping the crowd. They land on top of his head, but the others target them and they narrowly dodge their slaps. As they fall, another attack is sent their way but Okarun and Turbo Granny are flung away by Aira, prompting them to defeat the tulpas while she distracts the opera singers.

Aira is smacked down alongside the giant and is almost taken out of the fight, but when the scene of the Evil Eye hurting Momo flashes through her mind, she realizes she has to get stronger and wraps her hair around the second singer's eyes, climbing onto them. The third punches the giant she's standing on and knocks them down, however Aira evades the hit and flies near her face, prompting the fourth enemy to strike the other in the face. With the last giant standing, Aira suffocates him with her hair and pulls him down, sending him crashing into the floor as she remarks a singer must be cautious not to pass out due to lack of oxygen when performing. Meanwhile Okarun makes his way through the crowd and the musical bombs thrown at him, though Turbo Granny orders him to move faster before they get overwhelmed again. The boy says that he has already went all out twice when the cat admits that she would be able to take down the five musicians in one single beat. Okarun finally realizes what combat rythm truly means and he dashes forward at a mindblowing speed, headbutting each tulpa in quick succession, ending the battle.

Aftermath[]

Okarun and the Evil Eye starting their rematch.

The fallen musicians abandon their form and revert back to their original portraits, causing the pocket dimension and the chorus singer to collapse and disappear, bringing them back to the empty music room. Still shocked at what has just ensued, Okarun rushes to Aira, asking if she's alright and thanking her for her incredible performance. Aira freezes up, unable to respond and wonders where her usual personality went. Turbo Granny interrupts to mock her and the two start arguing when Okarun also thanks the yokai for teaching him combat rythm, although she claims that her power goes way beyond that simple concept. She then informs the two that the portraits they have just fought were tulpas, thoughtforms which materialized into the musicians due to the fear they induced students and also states that they will reappear if you play the piano late at night and you can still die. They decide to return to the Ayase residence where Okarun challenges the Evil Eye to finally overpower him, even though he has already went all-out once.

Anime and Manga Differences[]

The symphonies of Glasses, Mozza, Trainspotter and Grandma Bach.

The symphonies of Glasses, Mozza, Trainspotter and Grandma Bach.

During the Symphony No. 6: Pastoral, additional scenes of Aira using her acrobatics to evade the bombs are shown. When Okarun is hit by the rest symbol, Turbo Granny is immediately hit by another one too. Upon Ninth's defeat, the musician's head spins around and detaches from the rest of the body similarly to a figurine. A major plot point of the fight in the anime is that all the musicians are able to levitate even without the conductor Ninth. After the first symphony, each of the four musicians starts performing a melody of their own, essentially trying to force four different domains at the same time. Vanben will be the one to stop them and start Symphony No. 9: Chorus, which immediately transports everybody to a dark opera house and the first opera giant starts singing, followed by the other three. Instead of the crowd appearing in the seats, they instead exit throughout the singers' mouth as dark figures. And in the anime, the musicians dont hide behind the giants but they instead play from a far away stage at the opposide side of the opera house.

When Aira is smacked by the giant singers, she doesn't think about the Evil Eye attacking Momo but multiple instances with Okarun, Momo, Jiji and the other members of the Family. Upon the first opera singer's defeat, Okarun and Turbo Granny are shown barely exiting the crash site and making their way to the musicians, dodging multiple bombs and evading the crowd that now finally comes out of the stands. Unlike the manga, the third giant isn't immediately taken out by the fourth's punch but she recovers, although Aira will utilize the last opera singer's momentum to move her hair towards the woman, delivering a devastating kick in the face that takes her down for good. The defeated giant keeps singing even when laying onto the ground as Okarun frenetically rushes through the illusions, jumping on their heads and kicking them. When an explosion sends them his way, he pushes them and keeps running forward before leaping into the air, where he gets hit by a bomb, but continues and dives into the crowd.

At the end of the fight, a second battle begins because Turbo Granny accidentally hits one of the piano notes, summoning the Music Room Portraits again.
