Red Baron (レッドバロン Reddo Baron?) is an Enenra-type yokai who is an infamous assassin member of the Black Paladins, known as the Flying Ace (撃墜王 Gekitsui-ō?), and a subordinate of Count Saint-Germain's.

To help achieve the Count's plans to create the ultimate yokai by gathering powers, Red Baron devised a plan to steal the powers of Momo Ayase, Okarun, Seiko Ayase, as well as their allies, by hiring humans to confront his targets on his behalf. Following each of his underlings failed attempts, he collaborated with an agent of the Serpo to directly confront the Ayases and their allies in Shimane.

In Dandadan, he is one of the overarching antagonists of the Kozuka Knives Arc, the main antagonist of the Shimane Arc, and a major antagonist of the Current Arc and the Current Saga as a whole.

Appearance[]

Red Baron is a muscular, young-looking humanoid man with short hair and sharp eyes, his expression perpetually stern and composed. His attire consists of a high-collared shirt accented by a neatly tucked cravat, layered beneath a long, double-breasted coat. The coat features sharp dark trim along the collar and epaulettes. He preferably rolls up the sleeves of his coat up to his elbows and wears dark gloves, along with dark and light shoes.

While posing as a priest of Izumo Taisha, he always kept his eyes closed and wore a traditional priest attire; a white robe and a hakama. To hide himself in public, he covered himself with an entirely black, hooded coat.

Personality[]

Red Baron is a calm and serious yokai with a calculating nature as a means to minimize the risks associated with his tasks, such as hiring agents from the shadows to do his dirty work in order to avoid unwanted attention or using deception than confronting his enemies directly. When working alongside others, Red Baron is quick to deflect blame should his plans fall apart. When Seiko uncovered his deception in coercing her, Momo, and Bamora into relinquishing their powers, Red Baron sidestepped accountability and immediately pressured his partner Reptilian into devising a fix. However, when collaborating with his superiors, Red Baron adopts a more deferential stance by accepting full responsibility for failures. Yet even then, he remains prone to shifting blame onto his allies, using their involvement as justification for his missteps.

Red Baron bowing to Seiko before fighting her.

Red Baron bowing to Seiko before fighting her.

He possesses disciplined traits of a warrior, as he bows to his opponents as a gesture of respect before initiating battle. He finds genuine satisfaction engaging strong opponents who are able to match his strength and will commend them for their battle performance and willpower. At the same time, he is a ruthless fighter, aiming to put down his opponents with lethal strikes, and is not above inflicting more pain even when they are down. He also does not tolerate being disrespected, having been prompted to kick Seiko away and throw an insult at her after she expressed how little she thinks of him and his ability. Philosophically, he views those with physical bodies as inherently tethered to survival instincts. After Seiko refused to surrender, despite the grievous injuries the yokai inflicted on her, Red Baron became curious to know if he could break her indomitable will if he were to further damage her body than it already was.

As a subordinate to a nobleman, Red Baron demonstrates sincere reverence toward Count Saint-Germain, consistently kneeling with a bowed head upon meeting him, a gesture more deferential than the stance he gives towards his opponents in battle. Though his voice carries unwavering fidelity, Red Baron does not shy away from voicing criticism when warranted, suggesting a master and servant relationship built on mutual candor and trust. He is also rather opposed to the notion of nobility lowering themselves to the level of commoners, let alone forming friendships with them, as he finds that such behavior defies logic and sees no practical benefits.

Background[]

Red Baron, at some point, joined the Black Paladins, a secret group of diviners who collect occult powers and use them to eliminate the competitors of large corporations who seek their services, and became a feared individual in the paranormal industry, being infamously known as the lethal assassin the Flying Ace.

Following Count Saint-Germain's acquisition of the Fairy-Tale Card's power, Red Baron collaborated with the man as his subordinate by helping him to gather more powers in his plot to create the ultimate yokai. As a solution, he proposed having him loan his Asura kozuka knives over to him and grant a select few powers and assign them the mission of acquiring powers from specified Power Users on his behalf, with the reward for their success being a wish he promised to grant.

Kozuka Knives Arc[]

Red Baron communicating with Koki.

Red Baron communicating with Koki.

After the failure of Murakami's henchmen's, Koki Yukishiro, attempt to steal Momo Ayase's powers while she was by herself in the school library, Red Baron communicated with the girl from within a locker. He informed her that her strategy was flawed because she had not made her target concede defeat prior to attempting to take possession of her power, a requirement set by the kozuka knife for its user. While Koki acknowledges her lack of mastery over her abilities, Red Baron emphasizes that she must yield to it and reassures her that she can become the person she aspires to be if she does.[1]

Red Baron communicating with Hase.

Red Baron communicating with Hase.

After tracking Seiko down at Juicy Gyoza Manufactory Dandadan, Red Baron sent out her location for any agent to attack her, ending up with Adachi and the Minotaur, ambushing her at the restaurant.[2] Later, Red Baron projected his voice to the student Hase, urging him to seize Okarun's unique power on his behalf using two Asura kozuka knives: the white kozuka, which held the power of Jumping Crone for Hase to obtain, and the black kozuka, intended for the purpose of stealing the power.[3] Red Baron soon receives a text message from Adachi that the mission ended in failure due to the spirit medium having backup.[4]

Upon learning from Adachi that she has acquired Murakami's abilities, Red Baron employs an agent in possession of the Fairy-Tale Card's power to act as an intermediary, instructing him to meet with Adachi at the embankment beneath the overpass where they could initiate the transfer. When Adachi arrives, Red Baron contacts her via phone, praising her efforts. However, he reveals that Murakami was one of their operatives and that her reckless pursuit of an unspecified target, along with the credit for Murakami's defeat attributed to Koki's Lord of the Flies power, has resulted in her disqualification. He then demands that Adachi transfer her kozuka knife and her powers to the man. Despite Adachi's pleas for another opportunity, Red Baron explains that her lack of resolve, stemming from her compassionate nature, prevents her from defeating and acquiring power from ID Cosmo-type targets. As Adachi continues to resist, the intermediary attacks her and force her to relinquish her power.[5]

Shimane Arc[]

At some point, Red Baron was contacted by the Serpo for his legendary skills as an assassin to help them either kill or steal Momo and Seiko's powers. The aliens hired an agent to help him in his mission and Red Baron disguised himself as priest of Izumo Taisha. Knowing that they would arrive seeking the Uchide-no-Kozuchi to return Momo to normal, he planned to lure them into a trap at a Matsue Castle's replica which his ally was camouflaged as.

Upon Seiko and her colleagues' arrival at Izumo Taisha, the pseudo priest informs her about the false theft of the Uchide-no-Kozuchi by the "Phantom Ninja Thief" and leads them to Matsue Castle.[6] After arriving, Red Baron staged a hostage situation by having a conjured ninja threaten his life if Momo and Seiko did not surrender, while also having them ambushed by multiple ninja. Realizing the deception, Seiko confronts the impostor priest, insisting he abandon the ruse now that she has identified him as the genuine threat. Once exposed, Red Baron dismisses his summoned ninja and changes out of his disguise. His accomplice then reveals himself and questions whether it would have been simpler to eliminate them and deliver their bodies to the Serpo. Red Baron clarifies that such a plan would have been challenging, which is why he staged the act, and urges his partner to fix their situation. After being left alone with Seiko, following his partner's use of his power to trap Momo and Bamora, the man bows before her.[7]

Red Baron standing over a defeated Seiko.

After showing respect to his adversary, Red Baron launches a powerful punch at Seiko that sends her crashing back, leading to a hand-to-hand confrontation where Seiko feels overpowered by his incredible strength. Though she successfully discerns his fighting style and dodges one of his punches, Red Baron makes her realize that her physical strikes are ineffective against him when her counter double punch goes right through his smoke form. He then retaliates by striking her chin, abdomen, and sends her hurtling back into the wall with his Setta. As Red Baron approaches Seiko, commending her skills in their battle, the spirit medium identifies him as a smoke yokai. Red Baron steps on Seiko's ribs and demands her surrender. Seiko refuses both his demands and to acknowledge him as a warrior due to her perceiving his ability as a farce. She then aims a kick at his groin, only for it to pass through his intangibility, and receives a kick back from the yokai for irritating him. While standing over her as she lies injured and defeated, Red Baron acknowledges Seiko's determination to keep fighting despite her pain but believes he can still break her spirit due to her nature as a living being. As he increases the pressure on her abdomen with his feet, they are joined by the Evil Eye, who crashes through the walls with a ninja in hand, expressing his annoyance at being made to wait outside.[8]

Red Baron hit by Jiji's Evil Gun.

Red Baron hit by Jiji's Evil Gun.

As the Evil Eye mocks Seiko's injured condition, Red Baron proclaims his intention to target the yokai for his power as well. His smoke body then dissipates after the Evil Eye hurls the ninja towards him, allowing the Evil Eye to swiftly snatch Seiko from Red Baron's feet. Red Baron confronts the Evil Eye as his next opponent and easily gains the advantage over him, leaving him unimpressed by the minimal resistance he could muster. Red Baron urges the Evil Eye to surrender since his physical attacks are ineffective against his smoke body and demands that he stop referring to him as "Nug Lover", which prompts the smoke yokai to disclose his true epithet. He then observes in confusion as the Evil Eye begins conversing with himself about swapping, unaware that the yokai is talking to Jiji within him. After Jiji persuades the Evil Eye into giving him control of his body again, Red Baron cautions Jiji that confronting him in his physical form will lead to his demise and whatever attacks he plans to use against him will be useless. However, Red Baron finds himself pushed back by Jiji's 'Evil Gun instead of dispersing into smoke from the assault.[9]

After being struck by Jiji’s Evil Gun, Red Baron becomes visibly stunned that the attack didn't phase through him. Jiji, reveling in his success, fires a second Evil Gun shot. Red Baron narrowly evades and retaliates with a punch, only to be intercepted by the Evil Eye, who swaps places with Jiji and blocks the blow with his elbow before countering with a kick. Red Baron disperses from the attack and responds with a powerful kick that sends the Evil Eye flying. Jiji reappears and fires a third Evil Gun, once again landing a direct hit. Red Baron demands an explanation, prompting Jiji to reveal that he's harnessing Spiral Power, a technique he learned from Seiko, which allows him to generate D-form energy capable of neutralizing his opponent's L-form smoke body. Red Baron, uninterested in the technical explanation, closes the gap and kicks Jiji away, declaring that understanding the mechanics is irrelevant since he still believes that he won't defeat him. Noticing Jiji once again shifting into his Evil Eye state, Red Baron deduces that the only reason Jiji can withstand his blows is by alternating control with the yokai inside him. He observes that the spiritual energy enveloping Jiji's body enhances his defenses, but also prevents him from firing the Evil Gun in that form. Seizing the opportunity, Red Baron launches a brutal assault. While maintaining pressure, he warns Jiji that without the ability to fire the Evil Gun, victory is out of reach, and reverting to his human form will only leave him exposed to his attacks that could potentially kill him. However, the Evil Eye counters by evading a kick aimed at his head, places his palms on Red Baron, and delivers a kicks that sends the yokai flying. Red Baron then notes Jiji entering a new state, one in which he is actively channeling the Evil Eye's power rather than merely alternating control.[10]

Red Baron defeated by the Evil Eye.

Red Baron defeated by the Evil Eye.

Red Baron initially suspects that Evil Eye has fully fused with Jiji, but Jiji clarifies that the two are rapidly alternating control over his body, a volatile process he compares to a flickering lightbulb. Red Baron, unimpressed, asserts that Jiji's core nature remains unchanged and dissolves into smoke to infiltrate Jiji’s lungs through his nose in an attempt to suffocate him from within. Struggling to breathe, Jiji fires his Evil Gun at the smoke, hoping to force Red Baron out. However, Red Baron reveals that not all smoke is part of him, and that he merely uses it as a medium. He also notes the diminished power of Jiji's Evil Gun since the fusion, warning that only by reverting to his normal form could Jiji clear the smoke, an option Red Baron refuses to allow. He then violently emerges from Jiji's mouth and nose, threatening to detonate him from the inside upon rematerialization. In a desperate counter, Jiji fires his Evil Gun through his own body, successfully ejecting Red Baron. and uses his hand to cover his mouth and nose to prevent the same action from happening again. Red Baron tells Jiji to not underestimate and begins to shift into smoke once again. However, Jiji retaliates with a point-blank shot, revealing to Red Baron that repeated hits shorten the yokai’s transformation window. After Jiji swaps places with the Evil Eye, Red Baron hears the yokai's anger towards him for previously standing over Seiko, the woman who chose to make him part of her family, and receives a barrage of punches that launches him out of the castle and into a nearby pond, resulting in him being knocked unconscious.[11]

The day following his defeat, Red Baron returned to Kamigoe City to report back to Count Saint-Germain at Tasty Geezer Breads where the Count was busy baking alongside his assistant. After his superior greets him with feigned ignorance as usual, much to Red Baron's dissatisfaction, the two relocate to a private room, where Red Baron pleads for forgiveness for his failure in Shimane, blaming the Reptilian for interfering. He then returns the kozuka knives the Count had lent him after his plans resulted in failure and vows to reclaim the powers still held by his agents. Count Saint-Germain reassures Red Baron that his efforts have not been in vain, that they have gathered valuable data, such as the aptitude of yokai and the evolution of their powers. While Red Baron is commended for uncovering Koki Yukishiro's remarkable talent and enhancing her Lord of the Flies ability to a greater level of strength, he is cautioned that his visibility will attract the attention of the Sorcerers Association, which could ultimately interfere with their plans. In response, Red Baron highlights that although the Serpo sought their help, they have not shown themselves. Count Saint-Germain conveys his skepticism about collaborating with the aliens, believing that the sentiment is reciprocated, and observes that the Serpo still do not understand the uniquely human ability to harness yokai powers. He then suggests a new approach: to cultivate a friendship with Okarun and his allies to reach their objective. After their meeting concludes, Red Baron leaves the bakery questioning Count Saint-Germain's behavior in pretending to be a commoner and wanting to be friends with them, something he declares to be impossible.[12]

Current Arc[]

At the shopping mall, Red Baron and the two other paladins Jack Wisp and Vakappa confront Rin Sawaki and Koki Yukishiro, dragging them into Empty Space.[13] While Jack Wisp immediately attacked the girls, Vakappa questioned Red Baron about whether the three of them were necessary to confront such "pigs", though Red Baron cautions his comrade not to underestimate them, regardless of how harmless they appear.[14]

Red Baron restrains Rin.

Red Baron restrains Rin.

After Vakappa rescues Jack Wisp from being overwhelmed by Koki's insects, Red Baron immediately orders Jack Wisp to ignite a fire at the back, then lectures Vakappa after his colleagues notes his liquid manipulation is unable to reach the girls due to Rin's gravity field, telling him that a true warrior must learn to read the terrain of the battlefield. Using the smoke and gust of wind Jack Wisp produces, Red Baron manages to manifest behind Rin and seize her by the mouth, cutting off her song. He then hands Rin and Mai over to Vakappa who drowns them with his liquid body. After Koki is restrained by Jack Wisp, Red Baron demands that she yield if she wishes to save Rin from drowning to death. Upon her compliance to surrender, Jack Wisp brings out a kozuka knife from his mouth and presss it toward her hand.[15]

Abilities and Powers[]

Physical Prowess[]

Enhanced Strength: Red Baron possesses incredible physical strength, being capable of sending his opponents flying backwards with a single punch, with the force behind it also being strong enough to have them damage anything they knock back into.

Skill Set[]

Red Baron overwhelming Seiko in close-quarters combat.

Red Baron overwhelming Seiko in close-quarters combat.

Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Red Baron possesses exceptional prowess in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts, delivering heavy blows from his immense strength with his fists and kicks that can overpower his opponents and inflict damage to his surroundings. He proved to be the superior fighter against Seiko, a formidable hand-to-hand combatant herself, in their close-quarters battle and ultimately defeated her. However, it should be noted that Seiko was still recovering from her previous fight against the Kettetsu Power User at this point in time. Furthermore, he can amplify his attack power using his smoke-based spiritual abilities.

His fighting style revolves around targeting his opponent's vital spots and seems to be reminiscent of the Chinese martial arts known as Bajiquan where the practitioner harnesses explosive, short-range power into their strikes.

Techniques[]

  • Marlbo Ro (まる Maruboro?): Red Baron delivers a strong uppercut to his opponent's abdomen. This was first used against the Evil Eye. The name of the technique is most likely a reference to the American brand cigarettes Marlboro.
  • Red Marl (まる Aka Maru?): Red Baron performs a low kick to sweep his opponent off their feet. This was first used against the Evil Eye. The name of the technique is most likely a reference to one of the variants of Marlboro cigarettes known as Marlboro Red.
  • Marl Menth (まる Maru Mera?): Red Baron delivers an upward kick to his opponent to have them in the air. This was first used against the Evil Eye. The name of the technique is most likely a reference to one of the variants of Marlboro cigarettes known as Marlboro Menthol.
  • Marl Gold (まるきん Maru Kin?): Red Baron delivers a downward kick to his opponent's neck and strikes directed to their groin. This was first used against the Evil Eye. The name of the technique is most likely a reference to one of the variants of Marlboro cigarettes known as Marlboro Gold.
  • Gold Burst (キンバースト Kin Bāsuto?): Red Baron performs a barrage of punches directed towards his opponent's groin and finishes off with a kick that sends them flying back. This was first used against the Evil Eye. The name of the technique is most likely a reference to Marlboro Burst, crushable flavor capsules of Marlboro cigarettes.

Spiritual Power[]

Red Baron Smoke Manipulation
Strengths and Weaknesses
Red Baron's intangibility.

Red Baron's intangibility.

Being a yokai composed entirely of smoke, Red Baron is impervious to physical attacks, as they merely pass right through his form, thereby removing the need for him to take evasive action. On the other hand, he retains the ability to make direct contact with his targets and deal damage. Whether this stems from conscious control or an autonomous response is unclear. In addition to intangibility, Red Baron can infiltrate a person's body through their orifices, such as their nose or mouth, and proceed to their lungs to suffocate them from the inside.

As Red Baron himself clarified, not all of the smoke he generates originates from his body; rather, the majority is weaponized for offensive use, such as for increased movement and attack power. He is also able to manifest various things out of smoke, such as humanoid constructs capable of speech and self-guided action after being given a specific task that carries out his will. Along with this, he can conjure inanimate objects, such as clothing detailed enough to pass as authentic disguises, and weaponry.

Presumably through this power, Red Baron is also capable of projecting his voice onto others, allowing him to communicate remotely in a manner reminiscent of telekinesis, though the details as to how this is possible has yet to be disclosed. An alternative explanation may lie in his yokai nature, specifically the fact that non-spiritually aware humans are unable to perceive his presence, even when he speaks to them directly.

Jiji's clockwise rotating (D-form) Evil Gun making contact with Red Baron, an L-form entity.

Jiji's clockwise rotating (D-form) Evil Gun making contact with Red Baron, an L-form entity.

One known weakness to Red Baron's smoke-based body is the principles of molecular chirality. As an ethereal entity composed of L-form energy (loosening energy that rotates to the left), Red Baron becomes forced to take on a solid form when exposed to D-form energy (containing energy that rotates to the right), rendering him vulnerable to physical attacks. Such rightward-rotating energy can be generated through the use of Spiral Power, as demonstrated by Jiji managing to land a hit on Red Baron with a right rotating Evil Gun. Furthermore, the time it takes for him to become smoke when subjected to this energy is greatly increased.

Usage
Red Baron disguised as a priest and faking a hostage situation with a conjured ninja.

Red Baron disguised as a priest and faking a hostage situation with a conjured ninja.

Red Baron used his ability to briefly pass off as a priest of the Izumo Taisha to lure Seiko's group into a trap at Matsue Castle. Once there, he had a pre-created smoke conjured ninja hold him as a hostage to force them to surrender. After Seiko uncovered his plan, Red Baron released the ninja that was holding him captive and swapped his priestly attire for a new set of clothes.

In battle, Red Baron remains unfazed by incoming attacks, allowing them to pass harmlessly through his smoke-based body. This intangibility not only negates the need for evasive movement but also creates perfect openings for swift counterattacks. He can also manipulate his smoke to propel himself forward or add explosive force to his melee strikes. Another tactic he employs is infiltrating his opponent's body through their nose to reach the lungs and disrupt their breathing. As a lethal escalation, he can rematerialize while still inside the target, causing their body to rupture.

Urban Legend[]

Enenra (煙々羅, en'enra; lit. "lightweight-fabric smoke"), sometimes enraenra (煙羅煙羅), is a yōkai, or Japanese monster, composed of smoke and darkness. It was first featured in the Konjaku Hyakki Shūi, circa 1781.

Trivia[]

  • Aligning with him being a smoke yokai, Red Baron's named attacks are inspired by real-life tobacco brands and cigarettes packages, namely Setta and Marlboro. Furthermore, Count Saint-Germain remarks that Red Baron has a strong tobacco scent.
  • Red Baron's name gives reference to Manfred Von Richthofen's red plane, a legendary fighter pilot in WW1 with eighty air combat victories.
