Rin Sawaki (佐脇 凛 Sawaki Rin?), mainly referred to as Class Rep (委員長 Iinchō?) is one of the main characters of the manga series Dandadan.

She is a student at Kami High who serves as the class representative of Class C. She later became one of Momo and Okarun's main allies whenever the two are faced with the paranormal.

Appearance[]

Rin is a young girl of average height with brown eyes and long brown hair that she styles into pigtails and has bangs that cover her forehead. She also wears glasses with purple frames. Her common attire is her school uniform; a dark buttoned up blazer with her school emblem located around the left breast, a collared shirt, a bow, a dark short skirt, long socks, and sandals.

Personality[]

Rin is a kind, caring, thoughtful, respectful and dutiful young girl. As Class C's representative, she has her classmates' best interest at heart and hopes that they can confide in her with any problems they may have. She is also not above being confrontational if it concerns the well-being of her classmates. Rin's caring and selflessness dates all the way back to her childhood, being willing to look after her bedridden grandmother and doing chores around the house to take some of the burden off of her mother who was out working, even at the cost of her social life with friends.

Rin has a passion for vampire romance fiction and dreams of one day writing her own story as a novelist. In addition, she also possesses an over-active imagination and has a tendency of getting lost in her thoughts when thinking of implausible scenarios that are vampire related, which comedically leads to her subconsciously saying everything in her head out loud. When made aware of this by someone nearby, Rin automatically assumes in embarrassment that they can read minds and it is confirmation that they are a vampire. This side of hers mainly occurs whenever she is faced with something unexpected, such as her meeting the talking stuffed cat Turbo Granny for the first time, even mistaking her for a male partially due to her crude language. She also has a tendency to swoon for many of these "vampires."

Family[]

Okarun[]

Okarun caught Rin's attention after he accidentally unleashed the Turbo Granny's power in class, causing her to mistake him for a vampire. While been meaning to approach him to talk about what she saw, she did not want him to view her as being weird and held it off. It wasn't until she saw his altered form a second time that she decided to ask him directly if he was who she thought he is.

Rin cares about Okarun's well-being as a classmate, having tried defending him from Momo who she initially thought was taking advantage of him, and even blocked both Momo and Aira from seeing Okarun due to her belief that the girls were taking advantage of him. She also acknowledges him as a trustworthy person; though in one instance she found it hard to believe that he was telling the truth about Kinta piloting a mecha. While it hasn't been pointed out by anyone, it is hinted that she possesses feelings for Okarun, as evident by her face blushing whenever she is around him, though this might just be due to his Turbo Granny form resembling a vampire.

Momo Ayase[]

Rin finds Momo to be a disturbance to her classmates whenever she comes over to Class C to meet with Okarun and initially mistook her for a bully who coerces him. At the same time, Momo sees Rin as a troublesome person to deal with after the latter addressed the issues she had with her, which lead to the two girls engaging in an argument. Upon Bamora's placement in Class C, Rin saw to it that Momo, along with Aira, would not disrupt the class's studying session by blocking the door, much to their irritation. Following the conclusion of the Onbusuman Arc, Rin apologized to Momo for believing that Momo was bullying Okarun.

Kinta Sakata[]

Mai Kawabanga[]

Mai was Rin's childhood friend and the two had dreams of becoming idols. One day, when Mai managed to land them an audition, Rin was unable to go as she had to take care of her ailing grandma, causing Mai to lash out at her, calling her a '"traitor" to her friends. Later on, Mai would come to regret her words towards Rin, knowing now the true reason why Rin couldn't go, and refused to proceed to the audition without Rin, so Mai's mother called Rin to pick her up. Unfortunately, Mai and her mother would get killed in a traffic collision, leading Rin to feel at fault in believing that if she had declined, Mai and her mother would still be alive. However, Mai's spirit would continue to haunt Rin for her death and failed dream for the majority of her life until Rin met Okarun and Momo, who helped Rin confront Mai's spirit. During the confrontation, Mai turned into what would have been her human form had she not died, and the two girls apologized; Rin for Mai's death, and Mai for her harsh words, leading the two girls to reconcile. After beating the hostile spirits, Mai seemingly passed on as Rin tearfully parted ways, but it's revealed that Mai had decided to stick around instead, intent on putting Rin back on the path to becoming an idol, much to Rin's shock. Mai's spirit even rejected any other aspirations Rin had, bluntly saying her life has no meaning unless she becomes an idol. Despite this, Mai's spirit still cared for Rin and still continues to help Rin when necessary.

Background[]

As a child, Rin was put in charge of taking care of her bedridden grandmother while her mother was out working. While in elementary school, Rin made a great impression on her classmates after showcasing her talent for singing, catching the eye of a girl named Mai Kawabanga who believed that together they have what it takes to become idols. Rin complied with Mai to practice for an upcoming junior idol audition, however, after her mother made her aware of how dependent she is of her to look after her grandmother when she is away, Rin unfortunately told Mai and her friends that she would have to skip out on the auditions to continue her duties at home. With Mai's friends interpreting this as a lie and her mother being lazy, Rin makes a statement saying that she believes that there is no worth in them becoming idols, leading to her friendship with Mai ending as the girl viewed her as a traitor.

Synopsis[]

Acrobatic Silky[]

At some point after the Turbo Granny's defeat, Rin stumbled upon Okarun's kintama and made the decision to hand it over to the police as a valuable object. The next day at school, Rin noticed Okarun undergoing a change in appearance after he unleashes the Turbo Granny's power from reacting to a classmate disrespecting Momo, leading to her assuming that he is a vampire. After these two phenomena, Rin began to notice a sudden weight on her back that gradually got heavier each day, unbeknownst to her that it was due to the fact she was being haunted by a Onbusuman.

Evil Eye Arc[]

In class, Rin noticed Okarun being forced by Miko and Muko to accompany them to Moe Moe Kikoho to visit Momo during her first day at work.

Kaiju Arc[]

Momo arguing with the class rep

Rin gets into a dispute with Momo.

Rin confronts Momo after she came to Class C to pick up Okarun, asking her that she stop coming from her class to visit since she sees it as a disturbance to her classmates who are studying. She also tries defending Okarun from Momo, believing that the latter is bullying her classmate, and gets into an argument with her until Kinta interrupts with a disturbing remark.

Space Globalists Arc[]

Rin stopping Momo and Aira

Rin prohibits Momo and Aira entry into Class C.

While everyone in Class C get to know Bamora, Rin stands out the classroom door to prevent Momo and Aira from entering, telling the girls that she refuses to allow them to disturb the study session. Later, Rin asks Okarun what his connection to Bamora is, seeing as how she is quite attached to him, and learns that she is staying the Ayases. After Kinta tries correcting Rin by stating that Bamora is attached to him because he defeated her in battle, Rin becomes confused and refused to believe a word he said, rather trusting whatever Okarun had to say. However, after Okarun complies with Kinta in that he piloted a giant robot, Rin runs out of the classroom feeling ashamed that Okarun would lie to her.

Onbusuman Arc[]

Rin reveals her encounter with the kintama

Rin reveals to Okarun that she had found his second kintama.

After seeing Okarun in his Turbo Granny form carrying boxes, Rin makes the decision to approach and ask him if he is a vampire as she suspects, revealing to him that she was aware of his transformation a long time ago after discovering a golden ball. After telling him about the golden ball, Rin is grabbed by the shoulders by Okarun as he suddenly becomes eager to know if she has it on her, leading to Rin having a wild vampire scenario about Okarun that she subconsciously says out loud. Rin tells Okarun that she had turned it in to the police box as a lost item and learns from him that the golden ball is actually a lump of spiritual energy. Despite Okarun doubting that she would believe him, Rin reassures him that she does believe in spirits ever since her discovery of the golden ball caused her to feel weighed down by a mysterious force on occasions and thought that it might be connected to his Turbo Granny form, which she admits that she was afraid to talk to him sooner about since she thought that he may think of her as weird. However, Rin becomes reassured by Okarun that he is opened to any questions she may have.

Onbusuman appears

Rin crushed by the Onbusuman.

Rin and Okarun arrive at the police box and are told by the front desk officer that the kintama has already been reclaimed, which did not make sense to them given that the person would have to provide proof that the lost item belonged to them. After Okarun suggests asking Momo for help to sense if the aura of the kintama is still at the police box, as they are suspicious of the police officer lying to them, Rin falls to the ground from being weighed down by a mysterious yokai that Okarun is unable to get off her.

Onbusuman Operation commence

The Onbusuman operation commences.

After receiving a head injury from the incident earlier, Rin is carried by Okarun to the Ayase household for help. By the time her wound is treated, Rin becomes shocked to meet the talking cat Turbo Granny, who becomes annoyed being looked at by her, and automatically assumes she is a vampire, only for the Turbo Granny to deny. Rin learns from Seiko that the yokai weighing her down is an Onbusuman and that, based off her backstory she relays to her, Okarun, and Momo, it is Mai's spirit who has regrets about the audition venue. Rin, Momo, Okarun, and Seiko then relocate to the high school where the spirit medium explains to them that it is dwelling for evil spirits, which will help to draw the Onbusuman out to commence its exorcism. After the Hayashi and a couple of men carrying a dashi hired by Seiko appear, Rin, Momo, and Okarun become informed by Seiko of the plan to take a route passing Mai's accident site and reach the audition venue in order to have Mai's spirit rest in peace, with the dashi carriers providing the transportation needed and the Hayashi's music barrier protecting them from the evil spirits that will be drawn to the Onbusuman while they are on the move, as per the plan's requirement. After Rin is once again weighed down by the Onbusuman, the group takes off on the dashi and try to outrun the evil spirits, in from of Ninomiya Kinjiro, chasing after them.

The Shining School Building defeated

Rin sings with Mai to defeat the Shining School Building.

As the group takes the route to the audition venue, Rin becomes overwhelmed by all that is happening and is soon ordered by Seiko to take the Hayashi's vocalist place after he is knocked out by a piece of flying rubble. Rin tells Seiko that she can't bring herself to sing ever since Mai died and becomes nauseous from being overwhelmed by a hallucination of Mai haunting her inside her mind. However, after Seiko encourages her to express all of her bottled up feelings into a song, Rin manages to take the microphone and sing to reform the Hayashi's barrier, preventing the animated school building from crushing the dashi. After she is once again weighed down by the Onbusuman, Rin tries getting her voice to reach Mai to tell her that she has something she wants to say to her. She then witnesses Mai's spirit being cleansed of her Onbusuman form, after her memories return from the group managing to reach the site where she was killed, and embraces her as the latter apologizes for the way she acted in the past. Rin is then asked by Mai if they can still be friends and tearfully responds answering yes. With the dashi falling apart and the giant animated school building drawing in close, Rin asks Mai if she can do anything to stop it from coming after them. Though she is told by her that it is out of her hands, Rin is reassured by Mai that they can stop it with her song and request that she sing it with her, which Rin gladly accepts. With both girls with a microphone in hand, the Hayashi's barrier becomes reformed with their singing and destroys the animated school building.

After finally reaching the audition venue, Rin sees Mai gradually fading in the distance and tells her that she truly wanted to become an idol with her in the past. She then hears from Mai about how she was envious of her back then, having been jealous of how she could break out of her nervous demeanor and become dignified when she sings, in contrast to herself who lacked self-confidence, and that she only wanted to become an idol to live up to her mother's expectations, which she found made her the real traitor. Before Mai passes over to the afterlife, Rin disagrees with what she said, telling her with tears running down her face that her cheerful and kind personality and determination to meet expectations was what made her cool and an idol to everyone around her.

Danmanra Arc[]

Okarun taking Turbo Granny, Rin and Mai to the hideout

Rin following Okarun back to Unji's hideout.

In gratitude for Seiko's help with the Onbusuman issue, Rin visits the Ayase residence to present her with a confectionery gift, only to discover that Seiko has already departed for work. Subsequently, Rin welcomes Okarun at the door when he arrives seeking Seiko's aid to release Momo from the confines of a cursed diorama. After Okarun recruits either Turbo Granny or Mai to fill in for the absent Seiko, Rin, alongside Bamora, tries to defuse a confrontation between the two yokai that erupted due to Okarun's request, which resulted in mutual insults. Once the Turbo Granny consents to assist, she enlists Rin to accompany her and Okarun in transporting a few materials required to address the issue. While en route, the four try to outpace Officer Bega, who is attempting to prevent the two high school students from staying out late. This leads Rin to suggest that they should comply with the officer's orders.

Rin frees the trapped cursed trunk captives

Rin using Mai's power to free the cursed trunk captives.

After arriving at the hideout where the cursed trunk is at, Rin stays behind to set up the black cloth and talismans for the release of the cursed trunk's trapped victims while Okarun and the Turbo Granny enter the inner world to rendezvous with Momo. Later, Rin informs the Turbo Granny, via the Serpo communicator, that everything is ready on her end. She then receives instructions to cautiously place the cursed trunk on the black cloth, allowing her to remove the figurines out of the cursed object safely and have everyone released. Given Mai's yokai nature and her inherent resistance to curses, the Turbo Granny advises Rin to have Mai utilize the black cords they have with them to encircle the cursed trunk and gently lift it onto the cloth. However, Mai refuses to cooperate with the Turbo Granny, instead choosing to merge with Rin as a revealing idol outfit to have her save everyone through song. Rin reacts with embarrassment by her new ensemble and requests to be turned back to normal, only for Mai to refuse and tell her that she has no other choice but to sing to revert back. Complying to do as Mai says, Rin uses the yokai's gravity manipulation to levitate the figurines out of the cursed trunk to free them. As everyone is released, Rin becomes startled to see an unconscious Unji falling beside her and wonders if he is okay. She then catches the eye of the Fairy-Tale Card and hears him perceiving her as being capable of destroying the world.

Rin begins to fall under the influence of the Fairy-Tale Card's mind control, but fortunately, Mai intervenes to save her. Before Rin could continue singing, the Fairy-Tale Card silences her using his mouth vanishing power and controls the Renjaku high schoolers to attack her. However, Count Saint-Germain arrives on time to stop them in their tracks and fight the Fairy-Tale Card. Following the Fairy-Tale Card's defeat by Count Saint-Germain, Okarun, Rokuro, and Unji, Rin employs her gravity manipulation powers to release Momo and the Turbo Granny from the cursed trunk at Okarun's request.

Abilities and Powers[]

Singing Talent: Rin is a talented singer with a beautiful singing voice.

Supernatural Abilities[]

Mai Kawabanga's Powers [v · e]
Rin can harness Mai's Onbusuman abilities by merging with the yokai. Once merged, Rin is compelled to wear a bikini-style idol costume, consisting of a pair of fundoshi underwear with ruffles and a turtle shell-theme bra, knee, and shoulder pads. A large turtle shell with spikes on the sides is noticeably strapped to Rin's back as well. The ensemble is then complete with Mai's bow atop her head, triangle-shaped earrings, a small tie with a collar, thigh-high boots, and long gloves, as well as Mai in the form of a microphone. Additionally, Rin's pigtail hairstyle becomes elongated and turns white.
Fused Rin Form
Gravity Manipulation
Rin using gravity manipulation
Through singing (as stipulated by Mai), Rin gains the ability to wield Mai's Onbusuman power to control gravity.
Strengths and Weaknesses

The primary strength of this ability lies in Rin's capacity to manipulate both living things and inanimate objects.

Due to Rin needing to sing in order to control gravity, this ability can be neutralized if an enemy manages to impede her singing in any manner, such as the Fairy-Tale Card's power to erase her mouth.

Usage

Rin utilized this ability to bring the captives trapped in Danmanra back to the real world by levitating their figurines out of the cursed trunk.

Etymology[]

  • Rin's surname, Sawaki, means "assisting supporting role", or more unflatteringly, "assisting armpit."
  • Rin's first name can both mean "strict" and "elegant"; something that fits her role as the class representative.

Trivia[]

  • In chapter 9, a girl in Class C with a hairstyle similar to Rin's from a back view is shown sitting at a desk as Momo asks two students about Okarun's whereabouts.

Notes[]

  1. Rin is in a second-year class at Kami High, suggesting that her age is 17.
