Yokai (妖怪 Yōkai?, Literally meaning: Apparition), or Evil Spirits (悪霊 Akuryō?), are spirits who are hostile towards the living. These kinds of spirits have made themselves well-known amongst the living and are given aliases as a result.

Overview[]

A tendency for a yokai is to steal life force energy from humans. The main reason for this is because they believe that if they come across a powerful life force energy, then they will be brought back to life; though the Turbo Granny believes that this theory is purely speculation.

Classifications[]

Mountain[]

Yokai who are given the classification of mountain ( Yama?) are recognized as being extremely strong evil spirits to where they have the right to be worshipped as gods. The possession of a mountain yokai is said to be fatal for average humans, causing them to lose their minds, have their cells break down, and eventually die in the end. It is for this reason that they typically seek out humans with very high spiritual power to take over.

Types of Yokai[]

An Acrobatic Silky (アクロバティックさらさら Akurobatikku Sarasara?) is classified as a modern-day yokai. According to folklore, she is a spirit of a mother who wanders the Earth in search of the spirit of a child. She is said to take the form of a tall woman wearing a red dress and a plate-like hat who moves like an acrobat. There have been reported sightings of her leaping from the tops of tall buildings.

Evil Eye[]

Main article: Evil Eye

An Evil Eye (邪視 Jashi?) is classified as a mountain yokai. It is a spirit whose body is said to be entirely white and has eyes that are set vertically. It twists its whole body in a dance-like motion. A single gaze from the Evil Eye's hateful eyes will have one's mind be filled with nothing but suicidal thoughts. It is possible that it is related to the Kunekune.

A Turbo Granny (ターボババア Tābo Babā?) is a yokai who resides in tunnels. There are at least three different types of Turbo Grannies: 80km/h Granny, 100km/h Granny, and 120km/h Granny.

There is a story that Turbo Granny's origin story originated from the tale of a young man who entered a mountain area and was chased by an old person who had survived after being abandoned there - which itself is based on the myth that during times when food was scarce old women were abandoned deep in the mountains to reduce the number of mouths to feed.

Slit-Mouthed Woman[]

Main article: Reiko Kashima

A Slit-Mouthed Woman (口裂け女 Kuchisake-onna?) is a yokai who is characterized by her wide mouth. Not much else has been said about this yokai so far.

An Onbusuman (オンブスマン? Literally meaning: Ombudsman, Viz: Ombusman), or Old Man Crying (きジジイ Konaki Jijī?) as referred to in the past, is a spirit of a child who died during infancy. They climb onto people's backs in search of love, and if handled with love, they will come to rest in peace. If showed rejection, the human the Onbusuman is haunting will be crushed under the yokai's weight from the loathing that continues to grow. Onbusumans have the power to manipulate gravity and draws other yokai to itself as another result of it growing massive.

Abilities and Powers[]

Yokai possess supernatural powers, such as casting curses or manipulating body parts, and are physically stronger than a human. As reflected by their titles, yokai have unique abilities that they are known for, such as the Turbo Granny's immense speed or Acrobatic Silky's incredible acrobatics. In some cases, these unique abilities are usually traits that they once had as a human and retained after death.

Being spirits, Yokai are invisible to the eyes of ordinary humans, some do not have corporeal forms so they are intangible and have the ability to pass through solid objects, or even possess human bodies. Since they are spirits of the dead, yokai do not age or get sick and can remain on the material plane potentially forever. Turbo Granny admits that she has been on the earthly plane for many hundreds of years.

Weaknesses[]

Although they are very powerful beings, yokai are extremely vulnerable to the spiritual magic of mediums and priestesses, these being the only humans capable of confronting them and forcing them to go to the afterlife, if a yokai loses its spiritual energy it will fade away and its soul will go into the void.

Furthermore, Seiko claims that spirits, including yokais, which manifest on Earth through their ethereal bodies exist in a state of constant energy release, characterized by their life force spinning to the left. This is opposite to the corporeal bodies of humans and other creatures maintaing their energy trapped inside, thus spinning to the right. Because of this, energy beams rotating to the right thrown against yokais essentially unwind their left-spin spirals, causing significant damage.
